With tonight's game in mind, I think is time to set our sights on the best goaltending prospect we currently have, the BSZ. Did you guys know he was preparing this summer in Czech Republic alongside Rittich? I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere around here, but there was an article in Czech media few months ago:

https://www.idnes.cz/hokej/nhl/david...485899_nhl_ald

Don't have time to make a full translastion at the moment, but long story short, is about Rittich and Sharks' goalie prospect Josef Korenar and their summer camp with HC Jihlava goaltending coach Jan Drsata. Both goalies are Jihlava natives so it makes a lot of sense, but surprisingly, they were joined by Zag this summer. No words about whose idea was that, Korenar only said Zag is going to play in Stockton next season so they will be seeing each other a lot.
My personal take is that was an idea of Flames management, apparently they like how Rittich works out during the off-season and thought it would benefit Zag as well. Also Rittich can give him some good advices how to handle his stimt in the AHL and develop into a real NHL goalie. If that's true, they are probably holding Zag to a high standard and he might have a bright future with the org.

That's cool that they have that connection.

Also, badminton as part of a training regimen is something I would never had of guessed. Hand/eye coordination and reflexes is important for a goalie.

I'm pretty good at table tennis but Reggie Lemelin kicked my ass badly and not one teammate could ever beat him, turns out he played it at least once a day even if by himself, same idea as badminton I guess

My bold prediction is that Zagidulin backs up Rittich by the end of the season.

I think he should, but I don't know if he will.

Talbot is only on a 1 year contract, so Zagidulin will probably get his chance eventually.

I also predict Talbot will turn out to be another classic Treliving UFA signing, and will only last the season if there are literally no other options.

You can tolerate a useless 4th liner, but a useless goalie not so much.

I also think Zag will slot in sooner than later.

I also have very little faith in all of our other goalies in the system.

Parsons could still maybe turn it around but even then I doubt he will ever be a starter.

Parsons is way too young for that judgment IMO. I still have high hopes.

To be fair, Zagidulin also a Treliving UFA signing

But not a Classic. The Classic Bad Treliving UFA is 30+ overpaid veteran. At least it's not a multi-year.

(Yeah I think they overpaid for Talbot. Not terribly, and I get it's a market thing. But the guy's a reclamation project.)

That was a classic Feaster signing, executed by Treliving

Feaster started it with Ramo and Berra.

No "Best goalie outside the NHL" = Not a Classic Feaster.

Maybe the Flames should hire this Pavel Drsata and let Jordan Sigalet go on his merry way...

Agreed, Zagidulin is older and has some KHL experience and that is still the second best league in the world. I think he is a front runner for Stockton starting job, but Parsons is at the beginning. He was penciled as number 2 at best behind Gillies anyway, so being behind Zagidulin doesn't change anything for him.

Actually his name is Jan Drsata... Not sure how I got that wrong, fixed now.

Misquote there. That's not my post. Anyway

I'm not that convinced KHL has any real claim to being the 2nd best league in the world. I don't see success in that league correlating with NHL success any more than success in Swedish or Finnish leagues. I've seen the games and the quality of play doesn't seem to be anything special either.

(They also don't take part in the European CHL which would help settle it.)

My guess is they're probably on par with or maybe even below the Swedish league, which is the best euro league in general. (They've won 3/4 CHL championships.)

"Zagi" is a little too much phonetically like "saggy."

"Zig-Zag" would be an awesome goalie nickname, but I get the feeling it'll be "Zags" or "Zag" or the aforementioned "Big Snag Zag." Sportswriters used to create colourful nicknames.

The KHL did participate in the European Champions Cup from 2005-2008. A KHL team won every year that they participated.

They also participated in the first Champions League in 2008-09, where both KHL teams made the semi finals. Zurich won in the end, but they also went on to beat the Chicago Blackhawks, so I don't think we should read too much into a single game result.

So when KHL teams did participate, they won 4 of 5 tournaments, and were in the finals every year.
