In Friedman's 15th Thought, he says this...
Quote:
There is at least one NHL team considering having its NHL roster together right from the start — rather than mixing the groups — for practice purposes.
|
It appears that the team in question is the Flames.

For those with poorly functioning browsers...
This shouldn't really be a surprise since the Flames had much success last season after starting camp with all the veterans together in China. I recall seeing many comments last year about how much of a difference it made to be together as one group from the beginning.

^ Like many I have been screaming for this approach for years. Get your team together from the start and play as a unit the entire pre-season. So many years past they would be a game or two way from the start of the year shoehorning PTOs in and playing with lines.

Flames seem to be approaching this season determined and very focused. They are acting like a team that is extremely embarrassed with how last year ended. I like that.

I think part of the tactic was to keep guys hungry for spots, and to give PTOs and minor leaguers the sense that they have a real shot at this.
To me it makes sense to keep your top 3 lines (if you have them) and top two pairings together all camp, and let the others battle out for the remaining spots.

Here's the post on Hanifin and Dumba from the Custance article:
Quote:
Later, Dumba shared his own knowledge with Noah Hanifin on how to get more velocity on one-timers, a conversation Nicholas witnessed. Not only did he see the conversation, he saw immediate results. These mini sessions between players happened repeatedly.
“Dumba was teaching Hanifin how to rotate his stick on one-Ts. Dumba has an absolute rocket,” Nicholas said in relaying the advice. “He has that snap at the end. That little snap at the end, when he rotates his hips and his hands release through that hip rotation? That’s what gives him that extra added kick. He’s showing Hanifin how to do that.”
Later in practice, Hanifin put a one-timer through the net.
“Right through the net,” Nicholas said. “Ridiculous.”

Of the 279 forwards with the most shot attempts last season (5v5), Bennett ranks T-149th, having had 20.7% of his shot attempts blocked by an opposing player.
The NHL leader, Mitch Marner, had 31.1% of his shots blocked, while at the opposite end, Nikolay Goldobin had just 12.5% of his shots blocked.
Of the Flames, Sean Monahan had 25.9% of his shots blocked, while Elias Lindholm had 18.7% of his shots blocked.
Per Natural Stat Trick.

On topic:
I love that the Flames are keeping the main group together from the start. Maximizing tactical familiarity and fluidity as quickly as possible is paramount to a good start to the season. No more pissing around with PTOs everyone knows aren't going to play past camp and starting the season disjointed.

Players in the Pacific are more likely to have higher blocked shot stats from having to play Kris Russell more.

My intuitive reaction to this is that all this indicates is which players are more willing to fire the puck because they have a high degree of confidence in their shooting skill, and which players are more likely to hold off and wait for a high-chance opportunity to score before letting er' rip. I don't have any data on this, but how much do you want to bet that Alex Tanguay barely ever had any of his shots blocked?

Marner is drunk.
$11M for 7 years is already probably a 10-15% overpay for him.
Supposedly he wants a three year deal where the 3rd year is $12M salary which is also crazy because then they have to qualify him at $12....not happening.
Honestly if I'm the Leafs I'm shopping him in a trade at this point, issue is nobody will want him due to salary demands.

It is more that he feels slighted when compared to the Matthews contract. If Matthews had been signed to an 8 year contract at a higher amount, he might have been more open to it. Leafs screwed up in the Matthews contract situation, but honestly, this might also be the new norm.

The Matthews contract is what started this whole mess.
Giving him the 2nd highest AAV in the league, while only locking him up for 5 years was ridiculous.
Dubas has been terrible at RFA negotiation.
But they can't double down on that now with an even worse contract.

Dubas folded with both Matthews and Nylander. He is going to fold here
They can’t risk a Marner holdout right in the middle of their window and they certainly can’t trade him.

Despite how Toronto portrays Dubas as some kind of wonderkind gm for being so young and already a gm, and locking down Tavares longterm, the guy has shown nothing to say he's better than a below average gm who caves to all rfa negotiations. He's been terrible at the Nylander and Matthews contracts.

Matthews is better than Marner. He deserves to get more.
7 x 11 is more than fair for Marrner.
If he wants 5 years than 9.5 per is reasonable. He wants 10 million for 3 years. It's nuts.
Point and Ratanen are as good or arguably better than Marner. I don't know why he thinks he deserves as much as Matthews.
It will be interesting to see how this turns out but I think a lot of Leaf fans have soured on Marner because of his negotiation style. His camp was clearly leaking info to Dreger and trying to put threats out like he will go to Europe. No other RFA has been like this so it doesn't look so good on Marner's end.
