I mean lets be honest, at its height it had big TV ratings because of hot girls in swim suits (in the day before readily available internet porn). Now its pretty much just a show that people watch just for the unintentional comedy that comes out of it.
I mean what's it about? Judging a near impossible standard of beauty that some people spend a life time obsessing over and pursuing?
Just let it die and take all those creepy kid pagents with it.
You're mixing up Miss America and Miss USA.
Miss America has always been different. It's really a glorified talent show. Something from year's past about wholesomeness, innocent and american pie. Nobody care about that anymore.
Miss USA and Miss Canada which qualify for Miss Universe is different. It's a true competition of beauty, confidence, poise and presence. This is the super bowl, and people care worldwide.

Don't know if you been asked already girly, but what makes you interested in beauty pageants? And why is it popular to more than just men that want to see ladies in bikinis?

Men watching pageants to see ladies in bikinis is probably the least popular reason that people watch pageants. You can see bikinis anywhere.
I think it's common knowledge that beauty pageants are mostly watched by women. Men may catch a beauty pageant here and there but women like myself, follow it like a sport. Like how you follow the Flames and the players, we follow the competitions around the world and the girls. There are FOUR major international pageants annually. In order of importance: Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth
It's part of the entire beauty industry. Women are into make-up, fashion, dresses, shoes, accessories etc.. and Miss Universe is a competition in this industry.
Originally, I watched the pageants for the gowns. They are so beautiful. Then like most things I went down the rabbit hole and followed more. I watch the gowns, the swimsuits, then their fitness, style, makeup, walk and confidence. It's not easy. Imagine you spend all year preparing and qualifying through regionals, then nationals, picking out clothes, styling etc..I watched many countries pageants throughout the year and the girls that have won are already transforming themselves to train for Miss Universe.
And the personal stories can be sappy but inspiring at the same time. The interview usually determines the winner.

I would disagree that it is a competition or sport, as we define those. I was part of the panel to be a Judge in the Penticton Peach Festival. There was subtle and not so subtle pressure from the top down on who we should vote for. My GF at the time was a former Miss Canada contestant, and told me this was common in pageants she participated in.

And here I thought I did well once dating a sunshine girl.

I think it's better now. I watched many of the national competitions this year and there many surprises. Miss Universe is also often a surprise because they judge on many factors.

I like how across all the different cultures and races participating in the pageant, all these ladies all seem to have the same face: high forehead, big eyes, button nose, big cheekbones, diamond chins. Celebrating diversity through homogeneity!
