Anyone else slightly pushed off this gratuitous sequel schilling?
COD games every year. Same with Halo. Over the top milking of brands in video games is just getting stale. I guess there's no shortage of other games but I turn my nose up to it none-the-less.

If people play them and they're fun, what's the big deal?

They do it because they sell.. when developers go off the beaten path of the successful franchises they are almost always not rewarded by the market.. unless it becomes a franchise, but that doesn't happen that often.

It's really not a big deal. What you're seeing is the entrenchment of the industrialization of the video game industry.
Big revenue titles based on brand loyalty designed to maintain the corporate needs of the publishers. The games are 'good.' But they are incredibly safe. It's not a problem if you essentially like playing the same game over and over again.
As per the SR-71 how fun would it be to push the throttle down to out-run a missile? I don't think that will be in any way playable. Would be incredibly boring. "Here's your mission, fly at 70,000 feet over this reactor, take pictures and come back, only... without any heartbeat monitors!"
Ah but what if it's a rush between getting the picture and outrunning the missile?
It's all about the story and the tension and emotion. What's the difference between an SR-71 mission to take pictures and the C-130 mission to blow stuff up, it's still just pointing and clicking and something happens.
Even if it's just flying the SR-71 for a short while and experiencing the speed and altitude and such, it would still be cool to do.
I mean one of the most exciting parts of any Call of Duty was when you were the sniper in the field while the guys walked by and tanks rolled around you. All you had to do there was not get stepped on! And it was very cool and very fun.

The Following User Says Thank You to photon For This Useful Post:
it used to be that good multiplayer games had a community build up around them, competitive leagues and mods extended the lives of these games and you really feel like you got your money's worth. now with them pumping out the same realistic FPS games every year you don't even have time to get attached to one before the hype machine starts rolling for the next. and all these same developers that got their start making mods for Quake or Half-Life are completely abandoning what got them there by refusing to make their games modable. that's why there's no more originality in online games, there are no more test beds for people to create wild and new games without having to worry about the bottom line
i'm not sure where this rant is going but i really hate what the online gaming world has turned into compared to what it was like 10 years ago. i could pick up a single copy of Quake 3 and have an almost limitless number of game types i could try out. now even when i find an online game i do like (Bad Company 2) i can only play the vanilla gametype and the game gets old so much faster. i think we're really starting to see how the console effect is ruining online PC gaming
Recent comments from Epic Games president Mike Capps in Edge Magazine (via Develop) show the developer's frustration with the PC piracy scene, as well as its hesitance to fully embrace the platform. "We still do PC, we still love the PC, but we already saw the impact of piracy: it killed a lot of great independent developers and completely changed our business model," Capps said.
except that independent developers are starting to thrive on platforms like Steam, and those piracy figures are so wildly overblown i just can't take them seriously
So today they released a teaser trailer for the multiplayer. Enjoy. Look like more of the same to me. More to come on September 1 on the multiplayer according to the trailer.
