As painful as it might be, do you then trade Backlund to get someone like Tavares? Not sure how you afford both over several years.

I'm still feeling hollow, sad, and full of disbelief hours after this one ended. I'm putting it 50% on Elliott, 25% on that disgusting high stick goal, and 25% on the team's epic choke.
This is the most depressed I have ever felt after a non Game 7 Flames loss.

I don't think they are shutting Johnny down because they're being physical. I don't see him getting leveled, I don't see him losing puck battles (cause he's never in them).
He's just not getting the time and space, he's over thinking, over passing, not playing with confidence. He is still developing and learning.
His shot is deadly accurate, when he gains some more strength and shoots more often he will hit a new level. Trading him at this point would be crazy IMO.

They could obviously have Bouma too.
I don't mean Backlund for Tavares 1 for 1. But the key part of the package, including pick, prospect(s).

Wouldn't be surprised if his finger was still bugging him either. I mean he came back uber quick from a break.

Flames don't have the prospects to add to Backlund that would come anywhere near JT

Would probably have to be a package around Bennett or Brodie (++).

JT could be a free agent and they get nothing in a year. That weakens their bargaining position.
Tavares
for
Backlund (extended)
2018 first round pick, 3rd round pick
Dillon Dube
Adam Fox

Elliott has done nothing in this series to help the Flames win, he's only hurt them. He better not be back next season. I've watched a lot of other series this postseason and every other goaltender seems to be at least adequate. Elliott has been unbelievably underwhelming.
The guy tries so hard to make the initial save because he doesn't track the puck well that he gives up terrible rebounds. That last goal tonight was an example where he was too focused on the first save and didn't place the rebound in a better position and instead it goes right up the middle and into a body and in the back of the net. We need a real #1 because he is not that guy.

I do that immediately which tells me that there's no chance it's happening. However if Tavares isn't extended then it might happen and would feel like an overpayment if he walks.

Would be funny if the NHL was as popular in the US as the NBA and this game was the lead topic on the Jim Rome show in the morning. He would tear the Flames to shreds.

Chronologically, last three losses by Canadian NHL teams were:
- Flames
- Flames
- Flames
Rest of the country has gone 8-0 over that span.

I'm trying to be that optimistic because the 4th game is always the hardest to win and the Flames have shown that they've closrd the gap considerably and could find a way to string wins together.
But seriously, who are we kidding here, we're up not only up against an elite team here, but we're up against the supernatural here. The hockey gods are cruel and appear to hate the Flames. We could be up 100-1 and still probably find a way to lose somehow.

Still can't believe they lost that game.
I can't recall one true Grade A chance that Elliott actually had to make a save on, they scored 4, took no penalties, only had 27 shots against, and somehow just lost that game.
They just weren't meant to win this series.
