If you still have your XP key, you could probably take it to Memory Express and 'borrow' their XP disc to do an install.
But in all likelihood, they'll probably charge you for the privilege.

ok, so i went and bought a new hard drive and i am trying to reinstall Windows XP (its an old system).
just found that the XP disc I have is actually an upgrade version, not an original install type.
what do i do now? besides buy a new computer of course.

I just insert a copy of Windows 98 when its asks for a previous version. Doubt that helps you right now

Pretty sure full and upgrade have different cd keys so you can't use an upgrade key on a full version install

If it requires you have a 98 disc to do the install, I have one you could borrow.
Chances are the key will work with a full install, but it would need to be the right version. Which version is the key for?

download a copy, and then buy a cd key online. $9.99 for a single, one time use.

He has the key. The downloading a random copy of XP can be kind of risky and if there is an alternative he is probably better off taking that.
