McMahon/Foothills redevelopment proposal
via Calgary Sun
Loss of tennis/soccer/baseball/etc. facilities makes me question of this project would be a net public benefit, even if it can pay for itself through the residential development.

Conceptually, it's interesting. Lord knows McMahon and area is dated and a hole. But it looks like something I put together in my Grade 5 Geography assignment.

I wonder if they even considered the long term crowchild plan. Some of the construction options require the parking lot to build a road parallel to the existing crowchild to handle traffic while interchanges are built.

can we go streaking in the quad(s)?
i am assuming that every square marked with an R is residential? I wonder how many residential units they are thinking?
Does calgary need a 6500 seat hockey arena? Who would play in it? We have Max Bell (Ken Bracko), Winsport and to a lesser extent Fatehr David Bauer. Would it be better to build a smaller multi-sheet ice rink facility?
also looks like the baseball dome is gone.

Looks like the players, coaches and all staff have to take the C train to work as well.

Wait, are the rink and what I thought was an inset of the rink actually separate? Is the big thing with the practice area a separate building from the rink? The practice area that just sort of blobs over 24th ave, like it doesn't exist? And if it is an inset, what goes in that area? WTF is this? Someone should not get paid for this.

Apparently University drive is also just an inconvenient line on this place-mat sketch as well.

Man, this is even more amateurish than CalgaryNext was.
On top of the other problems, they've completely demolished Foothills Park without replacement - thus leaving Calgary Babe Ruth Baseball homeless - as well as the minor baseball field right beside.
Also, why demolish Father David Bauer Arena and replace it with a much larger and completely unnecessary 6500 seat arena?
Putting putting a track inside the renovated McMahon is just dumb. That only pushes fans away from the field. That makes everything worse.
They've also eliminated the beach volleyball courts, which are very popular.

I think I know what is going on here...council is debating where to put some major dollars for future projects, and these guys lust realized they needed to get some sort of proposal out. So they got their unpaid 16 year old kid to draft it up and sent it to the Sun. Zero thought was put into any of it.

This proposal is nothing but a residential money grab. All of the buildings are multi level. Putting an unnecessary pool in as well as a man made pond only services the poor sobs who buy into this monstrosity.
A pool and a lake in place of a soccer dome and a baseball diamond.
I'm very glad Bill Smith was beaten out of the mayors chair because of this nonsense.
Way worse and transparently greedy than calgarynext.

Not to mention that they would have to demolish an existing pool to build those residential towers. Just another half-assed drawing reported as a 'plan'

I just realized that a brick by brick reconstruction of the Globe Theatre is going to be built under the bridge. Sneaky arts vote pandering!

Uh, Norma Bush and FDB arenas to be dynamited? I am opposed to any proposal that bulldozes arenas, even if the proposal has a new one elsewhere, there is such a shortage of ice in the city.

Wow, that IS worse than CalgaryNext. Only 17 residential buildings? Why stop there... surely you could fit 4 or 5 more?

Man, this is so bush-league! Just plain awful. WTF does Smith know about property development? He couldn't make it as a lawyer. He couldn't win the elections with all the money behind him. Now he is ready to get into major urban re-development? WTF does PBA know about master-planned developments? Sometimes I just watch in awe and have nothing to say...
