Blade Runner 2049
Didn't see a thread on this movie as of yet. It's more then thread worthy.
Went to see on IMAX and boy did this film deliver. Fantastic cinematography, story, acting (Gosling was off the charts, Jared Leto, Robin Wright and Decker).
Wonderful imagery that is full on visual explosion for the entire 2 hours and 40 minutes. Some great nods to the original Blade Runner (watched this last night).
This movie will be an instant classic and it's nice to see work like this.

It was honestly one of the best sequels I've seen. It didn't ruin any of the mystery from the original film and stands on it's own just fine. The soundtrack gave me chills every time it kicked in.

Ryan Gosling is one of the better actors of my time as far as I'm concerned. He's just tremendous. Going to watch blade runner and check this one out on blue ray probably.

Would it be worth seeing if you haven't seen the first.

Easily watchable on it's own. Stands alone, even the intro explains everything you need to know very impact fully.
I kind of thought it dragged in two spots, but after watching it every scene serves a purpose.

Beautifully shot, powerful soundtrack, but I found it tedious. Pretty disappointed.

My wife was on board with seeing it til she saw the bloated run time. Oh well. Maybe on demand sometime.

There are plenty of nods to the original and the main plot line is devised from the first movie so I would say probably not and strongly suggest watching the first film before seeing the sequel. Currently CraveTV has Blade Runner in its library although I'm not sure which version it is.

It was okay. The story is honestly a bit s*** if you compare it to the original, but if you just take it as a soft remake it was nice. There's not that many movies like this out there.
Film looked great, soundtrack went almost purely with nostalgia which I think was probably the right choice. There was a lot of effort and love clearly put into it. The script unfortunately wasn't quite up to par. There's good ideas here and there, but none of it really goes anywhere and the way the story goes forward is just downright clumsy at times. Few really stupid moments made it a rather uneven experience. In any case a valiant effort.
Overall I give it a 4/5.
One think I would like to complain about though is the pointless T&A. Seriously just wtf was the need for all those highly sexualized nude female bodies thrown around? Considering almost every other visual aspect of the movie was so incredibly faithful to the original, the gratuitous T&A stood out in a very sad way.
I mean, the original Blade Runner is possibly the only film ever with a scene in a strip bar where they don't show the stripping. It's great that feminism has made headway in the roles they offer for women, but that just made it all the more weird to have those so obviously unnecessary additions to the film. Just out of place and annoying.

You realize they showed the stripper naked in the original right?
That's without even getting into a debate about your definition of gratuitous nudity and how that relates to feminism.

Heh, I could recite the movie to you by heart, so yes.
Thing is, there's a point to it, and the way it's handled in the original movie is completely different. The scene even makes subtle commentary about the topic. Watch it again and maybe you'll catch it.
It's the difference between gratuitously displaying sexualized female bodies for no real reason, and telling a story with some rough edges.

Lol. Oh that's right. The nudity was too smart for me in the original and I just didn't get it. Of course you think that's a thing.
Ever think maybe you just aren't smart enough to understand the nudity in 2049? Somehow I doubt it.

It's not complicated, it's just subtle. If you don't see it, it doesn't make you dumb, just means you're not paying attention.

Not really no.
I like the way you go straight to personal attacks btw. Almost as if you're out of arguments already.

I never really like the first one or got why it was such a cult classic. Any point in watching this one?

Nothing gratuitous about that Joi ad at all, sure.
"Adults can handle it" is just a really silly argument. I can "handle" way, way more nudity. (I mean, I'm Finnish. I've probably seen all my friends naked, male and female. Not to mention all the porn)
I don't know, maybe it's because I've watched a ton of old movies lately (early eighties and earlier) and the full (original) Twin Peaks, but its really started to stick out just how much needless female nudity or semi-nudity there is on film and TV. Sure there's a few more beefcakes too than there used to be, but it's so rare in comparison it might as well not exist.
And yeah, it kind of jumps out in this film when it's really the only aesthetic change they made for this film.

Nudity and sexuality was human projections and expectations of sexuality on the skin job. An expression of societal programming we receive as humans and our expectations. His relationship with the hologram was not sexual, it was companionship. The opposite of the nudity scenes.
In effect it was there to show the mirror of humanity and humanities lust for sex over companionship.
So I may be reading to much into this movie.... but there is so much more to think about in this one then the first film. So many angles, but I didn't see a scene that didn't serve a purpose.
