This one hurts.

I was lucky enough to see Tom Petty at the Dome three(?) years back. Great show, it was fantastic to see someone perform whose music I had loved since a wee lad.

I'm quite saddened by this news.

Wasn't into his music at all and I don't actually know most of his hits ("Won't Back Down?") But I certainly recognize his importance and legacy in the music world. RIP.

He has some great tunes.

When I started dating my wife we went on a road trip together. American Girl was one of the sound tracks to that trip.

Whenever I hear American Girl, i will always stop what I am doing and just listen to the song - such a tremendous song. The live version of Breakdown from Pack Up the Plantation always gives me chills

Tom Petty was a big reason I wanted the Rickenbacker guitar on the cover of Damn The Torpedoes. (which was actually Mike Campbell's ultra-rare Chocolateburst 12-string). Such a cool jangly sound. Ended up getting a Turquoise Rickenbacker 12-stringer when I was much older.

Petty (well, the Beatles and Birds too) is why I wanted a Ricky.

I was at that same show and it was great! Just so many great songs and they sounded so good. RIP Tom.

As per TMZ

1:35 PM PT -- Sources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom's hospital room. We're told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he's still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer's death is inaccurate -- the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept. handled the emergency.

One of those instances where an already accomplished artist manages to catch lightning in a bottle and creates an unexpected masterpiece. Played the everlivin' #### out of that album (cassette actually) when it came out. Not a weak song on it.
