Is there anywhere in Calgary that I could get a custom piece of acrylic laser or CNC cut (or even better cut and a channel cut in it)?

I've seen some videos of people using that and LED neon-like strip lighting to create signs. I wouldn't mind trying to make one as a gift for someone I know's business.

My gut tells me that just getting the custom piece cut may end up more expensive than just ordering the sign from a place though.

Good question, I mean big enough to hang in a shop window or on a shop door and not look out of place. Probably at least 2' wide and no bigger than 3'? About half to 2/3 that in height.

I've had custom pieces laser cut before. I provided the design in CAD and they cut it. Wasn't terribly cheap though, but the work and material were top notch.

Model #1 for the year is ready to show off - 1/8 scale Invisible Man!

This one is all in the details - bandages, books, lab rats and other mad scientist stuff - so I had to up the game a bit. Went to the spice rack to fill some of the chemical bottles, specific brushes to give the impression of pages, wood shavings for the rats' cage, crushed glass, and a lot of washing for the many, many surfaces. Kept me busy and warm during the cold snap. I'm pleased with it.

Enjoy.

Spoiler!

And given that the kit is a reference to a classic horror film, I had some fun with the camera filters:

Finished up this built in desk project at my house. I built all the upper cabinets years ago during Covid but finally got the time to dive into the desk portion.

The desk/upper cabinets are ambrosia maple and the black cabinet/drawer fronts are ebonized reclaimed fir.

Nice. I can't tell by the pics, but is the left side of the desk floating shelf style? Or is there a bracket/beam that screwed into the studs that holds it up?

There is a small ledge bracket that supports it. Exactly as you thought it is screwed into the studs. I painted it the same grey as the wall so it is a bit camouflaged.

Finished my new work bench/assembly table yesterday. It took me almost as long to figure out how to upload the pictures to CP as it did to make the bench...

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. So far my wood working the last year has mostly been about making shop furniture. The mitre station you see in the background was another recent project. I still want to make upper cabinets above the mitre station and a better outfeed table for my table saw. Oh, and a real traditional workbench in the Roubo style. But those will probably go on the back burner while I do some non-shop stuff.

For those wondering, the bench is mostly made from Mansonia (also called African walnut) and some brown maple for the drawer fronts.

That looks like it would be an absolute treat to work on. It looks amazing! Be proud of what you have created.

While everybody else is check out the table I’m scoping out your shop set up. You have some really sweet gear!

It's hard to tell from the picture, but that's the Harvey G-700 Dust Processor, and I do highly recommend it. I've had it for a few years now and it's been great. Probably overkill... but we all know overkill is under rated.

This was more of an experiment than anything.

A while back I bought a couple of small-scale WWI planes (the molds are like 70 years old, so not the greatest kits) with the intention of doing something new and unusual, which ended up becoming this stab at a 3-D painting. Used a shallow box and tried painting an aerial landscape, then stuck the planes into an action scene. We got flak, we got smoke, we got bullet holes and spinning propellers, and we got some clouds (I'm definitely going to get rid of the cloud at the top of the frame - way too distracting). Advantage of the frame is that this can be mounted on a wall for display instead of on a shelf. didn't go exactly as I'd hoped, but still forward progress:
