and the nominees are...
https://www.oscars.org/oscars/ceremonies/2023
I haven't seen a lot of the movies but still follow the Oscars.
"Everything Everywhere All at Once" was has 11 nominations.
"The Banshees of Inisherin" next with 9.
John Williams has been nominated for the 53rd time!

Wildest to me is a bunch of actors seemingly at random campaigning for Andrea Riseborough and it not only working but knocking out one of two other major contenders (Viola Davis and Danielle Deadwyler)

I've seen almost everything this year, Andrea Riseborough has to win for "To Leslie", she's incredible. Cate Blanchett is close though.
"Triangle of Sadness" should win something, loved it.
"Everything Everywhere" is over rated, will be annoying if it wins anything.

What a joke the Oscars have become. Top gun and avatar for best picture? Top gun for best adapted screenplay? Chat gpt could write a better screenplay than top gun.
I get they’re pandering to the masses to try and bolster their pathetic and declining ratings but good lord. Have some standards or it cheapens the entire thing. And it was already a charade.

Angela Bassett's nomination is one that throws me for a loop, both for the Oscars and whatever awards show was a few weeks ago.
It's not that I think she's undeserving, it's that I found the performance to be utterly unmemorable.
I'll have to rewatch Black Panther before I form an opinion.

I enjoyed it, it was very silly at times, but I loved the creativity. I'm pulling for Ke Huy Quan though no doubt.

Happy to see so many noms for Everything Everywhere and the Fabelmans, which were hands down my two favorite flicks of 2022.
I'd love to see Brendan Fraser win just to complete the comeback. Dude just seems like a quality human being and he deserves it.

So... Tar is a rough watch emotionally. To a point where you probably want to be in a good, level headspace going in. I haven't seen To Leslie and apparently that's a hell of a performance from Andrea Riseborough but I have a hard time believing that it can top Blanchett in this. She might legitimately be the best actor or actress alive.
... F***.

At 90 years old, John Williams is the oldest nominee ever.
Judd Hirsch isn't far off, as he is 87. Hirsch now has the record for the most years between nominations at 42. (he was nominated in 1981 for Ordinary People)

I'm surprised to see movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once and the Banshees of Inisherin with multiple nominations. I enjoyed both movies, but didn't think they were that remarkably good.
Disappointed that RRR didn't get more nominations. That was the best and most impressive movie I saw last year, and one of the most memorable movies I've seen in a while.

I think it's more one of those "lifetime achievement" type awards. Like if you look at the rest of the 'Best Supporting Actress' field there isn't some huge standout or favorite, so they give it to an older / highly respected actress who put in a solid performance and hasn't won anything yet in their career.

the academy sucks, sometimes.
I was wondering why it wasn't in the running for best international film, and then I read India didn't submit the film as its official pick for the category.
https://www.inverse.com/entertainmen...category-rules
This isn’t a condemnation of India’s selection committee, but the entire structure of the International Feature Oscar. L ast Film Show is probably more Oscar-friendly than RRR, but both could have made the shortlist if the “one country, one movie” rule wasn’t in place. There are countless international features worthy of award consideration, and assuming that each country only produces one of note is ridiculous. If the Best Picture category was allowed to double in size, why not Best International Feature?

Everything Everywhere was a good movie. Not sure it was a great movie.
Michelle Yeoh did an amazing Job. She deserves her nomination.

It was a mediocre movie. It was far too long, and didn't really understand what it was. It could have made for a good kids movie given all the nonsense, but then they put R rated content which felt really forced. "Look at us being edgy!" The "sci-fi" aspects were silly, and by halfway through the movie they just kept changing the rules so it worked for the plot at that moment. It will probably get best picture, becuase the academy doesn't understand what a great movie is anymore(and hasn't for years).
