Meant to post this earlier this morning — here's my full recap of the game:

This game should've happened during rookie camp. A championship-calibre AHL club taking on a Canada West team ... good grief.

It looks like neither Abbotsford nor Manitoba will play any preseason games. You'd think they could have arranged something for the Wranglers to play a couple of games against one or both of them.

I guess no one wanted to pay for the plane tickets.

I believe Manitoba already played one against the University of Regina

Usually the prospects play the UofC, kind of ridiculous for an AHL team to play a University team but I guess they needs some reps in somehow.

Should've played the Flames Alumni instead.

Yes - kind of weird. The university teams are the guys who didn't make it in the pros vs the guys who did. A weird mismatch.

Not entirely accurate.

A number of university players may eventually end up in the NHL.

A number of university players would likely be able to play AHL hockey but have reailzed that the NHL is not an option and are smart enough to start a different career path.

Less than 1% of CIS players make it to the NHL. Guys like Derek Ryan, Joel Ward, or Logan Thompson are the rare exception.

Agreed that it's a decent league that graduates a surprisingly large amount of pro players though. In the past decade, the level of talent going to the CIS has increased tenfold. Most of the current U of A team were top six forwards and top four dmen in the WHL. Apparently the CIS teams from the maritimes (particularly UNB and Saint Mary's) are quite good as well. At least a third of those players are going to graduate to a respectable pro-league like the DEL, EIHL, EBEL, or SHL
