Is Mason ever turning things around this season. If he continues as such going to be hard to believe that he doesnt find himself in Stockton next season splitting the starts with Parsons.

18-6-1 is one hell of a record considering the other goalie numbers

A little catch up since my last post.

-Mavericks go on the road for 3 games. 1 against the Tulsa Oilers and 2 against the Allen Americans
-The first game finished up their 4 games in 5 days stretch and they fall to the Tulsa Oilers on Sunday March 3rd by a score of 3-1. Nick Schneider takes the loss on that night.
-This week they played the Allen Americans on Wednesday, March 6th where they beat them 6-0 and Mason McDonald earns his 4th shutout of the season and Greg Betzold picks up 5 points! (4G,1A)
-On Friday they pick up another win at Allen this time by a score of 9-3. Allen scores 3 times in the first period and the Mavericks score 9 unanswered throughout the next 3 periods. McDonald picks up the win on that night as well.

The ECHL trade deadline was on Thursday and the Mavericks do not make any moves. The only additions have already been announced through the last couple weeks including Jake Henderson and Brayden Sherbinin.

-Jared VanWormer has returned from his AHL loan to the Colorado Eagles

Mavericks host the Cincinnati Cyclones today for a matinee game. Mason McDonald gets the nod between the pipes.

Both teams come out hot right from puck drop. I actually talked the head coach of the Cyclones on a podcast last week and he was very much looking forward to this game. Cincinnati is currently 1st overall in the league with a 41-10-4-3 record and 89 points. Kansas City steps on the gas and pressure the Cyclones a lot through the first period. Obvious standout was Jared VanWormer. He placed himself in two opporunities that could have very easily been goals. Loren Ulett absolutely crushes a Cyclone player against the glass and is jumped as a result. At the end of their fight, Ulett has drawn a power play for the Mavericks. No score in the first period but the Mavericks put up 14 shots to the Cyclones 5.

A crazy 2nd period as Mason McDonald appears to make a save off of Peterson's shot then Dorowicz comes back around to score and causes an eruption on the ice. A full out line brawl that led to 32 minutes of penalties split between the teams. Each getting a game misconduct, roughing double minor, and unsportsmanlike conduct. Later in the period, Corey Durocher flips in a rebound that his teammates had tried at over three times. Jared VanWormer and Joey Sides pick up assists. The game stays physical and in the last minute, the Cyclones pull ahead once more. Mavericks still hold the advantage in shots by 25-17 but are down by 1 on the scoreboard.

Mason McDonald gets beat on a shot fired from the blue line in the first five minutes of the period and the Cyclones go up 3-1. Shortly after, the Mavericks get a power play opportunity but are unable to generate anything on it. The Mavericks deflate after the third goal and do not get a lot of opportunities due to sloppy play. David Dziurzynski hits a Cyclone player hard, causing him to go down injured and start another line brawl. It appears to calm downs and start up again. Mason McDonald skates halfway up the ice but does not step in. The refs try calming guys down but Loren Ulett gets into a lengthy fight. Ice crew scrapes blood off the ice as the ref confirms the penalty rulings. A whole lot of penalties are dealt but neither team going on the power play as a result. Loren Ulett and David Dziurzynski get game misconducts among other calls and leave the ice. About a minute after that mess the Mavericks score! Corey Durocher gets his second goal of the night and Joey Sides picks up his second assit of the night. Greg Betzold also stays hot and gets a point on that tally. Kansas City pulls McDonald with just over a minute left in regulation and no more than 20 seconds later, Greg Betzold ties the game! Corey Durocher picks up his 3rd point of the night off the assist. This game goes to overtime.

Halfway through overtime, Rocco Carzo stops a shot that breaks his stick then hits him in the mouth. He is escourted off the ice by the trainer and appears to be in a lot of pain. Both sides get their turns at each other but neither are successful. Mason McDonald stops 35/38 through 65 minutes of play. This game goes to a shootout. None of the Mavericks shooters are successful and Cincinnati's 2nd shooter scores so they win this one. Mavericks still pick up a point in this game. I can't speak for the road games but this game was the best I have seen out of them this year. Absolutely outstanding performance.

Nick Schneider gets an opportunity to start tonight for the Mavericks. As of lately, it has seemed he will get 1 start for every 3 starts McDonald gets. Mason McDonald does not dress for tonight's game so Ben Halford sits on the bench for backup. I am not sure the reasoning behind that one. As far as I know, he is healthy. Might just be to give Mase a break before they go on their 8 game road trip. They play against the Oilers affiliated, Wichita Thunder who are 10 points under them in the standings. So far 2 teams in the league have clinched playoff berths and the Mavericks hold the last spot in the Mountain Division with a 7 point lead on the Rapid City Rush. Mathematically they should win this game tonight, but regardless of the standings, Wichita always brings a tough matchup that has a Battle of Alberta feel to it.

Rocco Carzo is back on the ice after a scary looking play in overtime against the Cyclones. He is wearing a cage on his helmet to protect I'm assuming a jaw injury after getting a puck to the face. Wichita scores first just shy of the six-minute mark. Goal coming from Jason Salvaggio. Joey Sides wears the A today with VanWormer's absence and answers back with a goal of his own! Tying goal assisted by C.J. Eick and Corey Durocher. Greg Betzold takes on Jared Wilson in a fight. I am still unsure as to what sparked this but it appeared to happen mid-play. Both serve their 5 minutes in the box. Joey Sides didn't like the score the way it was and decided to do something about it. He scores his 2nd of the night, putting the Mavs up 2-1 and Eick picking up another assist. This score holds to the end of the period and the Mavs head to the locker room up 2-1 and leading in shots 11-10.

Greg Betzold stays hot and scores the third goal of the night for the Mavericks just as a Wichita penalty comes to an end. Mike Panowyk and Darian Dziurzynski pick up assists. Goal game just over 5 minutes into the 2nd period. The refs get a little whistle happy through the bulk of the 2nd period. Mavs go on a 5 on 3, then Wichita does. 4 on 4's power plays, penalty kills are at large but they all go through with no change in the score. Mavericks hold a 3-1 lead in goals and a 21-16 lead in shots.

The third period brings intensity from both sides but not a whole lot of production. A couple of penalties are whistled here and there. Both sides get their scoring opportunities but the score stays at a standstill. Nick Schneider stands tall in some tough rushes and zone pressure. Wichita calls a timeout with 1:38 to go in regulation and holds their goalie on the bench for a face off in the Mavs zone. The play pays off for Wichita and they get 1 back. It stays that way and with some good defensive play to end the period, Mavericks win this game 3-2. Schneider stops 28/30 shots.

Mason McDonald did not dress last night due to illness. He wanted to play through it but was instructed not to from the team as they still have Ben Halford hanging around on reserve.

Kansas City does not get off to a great start on their 8 game road trip. So far they are 0-4.

Scores are as followed:

March 19: 4-2 loss to South Carolina Stingrays (Mason McDonald)
March 21: 5-3 loss to Greenville Swamp Rabbits (Mason McDonald)
March 22: 5-3 loss to South Carolina Stingrays (Nick Schneider)
March 23: 4-3 loss to Atlanta Gladiators (Mason McDonald)

They still hold the final playoff spot in the mountain division ahead by 7 points on Rapid City with 2 games in hand. The top 3 spots in the division have already been clinched.

The 6 game losing streak turns into 7 after the Mavericks fall to the Toledo Walleye last night by a score of 4-1. Corey Durocher scores the lone goal for the Mavericks. Mavs outshoot the Walleye all game but still come up short. Shots end 39-30 in favour of the Mavericks. Nick Schneider takes the loss for this game. The Mavericks will be back in action tonight against the Fort Wayne Komets.

The ECHL announced that they will implement instant replay in all the rinks next season. This will be very helpful for goal review.

Mavericks are finally back on home ice to preview what may be seen in the first round of playoffs. They host the Tulsa Oilers tonight.

The first period starts off hot as Corey Durocher opens up the scoring in the first minute and 10 seconds. Tulsa sits in that goal for a while but not for long when they answer back 6 minutes later. Mason McDonald gets tested early and stops 18/19 shots in the opening period. Score holds at a tie going into the 2nd.

Tulsa throws Kansas City's game right back at them and scores within the opening minutes of the 2nd period. It does not hold long as former Mav, Eric Freschi takes a slashing penalty that ultimately leads to a Mavs goal. David Dziurzynski gets the assist after he throws a shot at the net that Rocco Carzo tips in. Corey Durocher wanted another point on the night as well and scores an unassisted goal to put the Mavericks ahead by 1 going into the third period. After two complete periods, the Oilers outshoot the Mavs 31-19.

Tulsa strikes quick again and ties this game within 1:08 of the 3rd period. The third is played substantially slower paced than the last two periods but Willie Raskob makes a heck of a shot on his way down on a fall and puts the puck past the Tulsa goalie. The Mavericks get the lead with 3:33 to go in the 3rd. Tulsa calls a timeout with just over a minute to go in regulation and pulls their goalie for the extra attacker. They hold their ground and win their last home game of the regular season 4-3! Tulsa finished outshooting them 40-27

Mavericks fall to Tulsa in Game 2 by a score of 3-2 in overtime. I was unable to cover it but Mavs goals were credited to Corey Durocher and Joey Sides. KC scored a single goal in the first two periods then Tulsa scored their two in the third. The final goal was scored 8:54 into overtime. Mason McDonald was in net for the Mavs and stopped 42/45 shots.

Game 3 is tonight in Kansas City.

Mavericks take game three by a score of 3-2. Mark Cooper picks up the first two goals of the game in the first period and Jared VanWormer gets the third goal in the third period. Rocco Carzo appeared to have an empty net goal in the last five seconds but it was waved off due to the whistle being blown beforehand because of a fight. Mavericks take a 2-1 lead on the series. The scoring in the game alone proves how good it is to have Mark Cooper and Jared VanWormer back from AHL duties full time and playing on the top line together.

Game 4 takes place at home tonight. Win or lose tonight, the Mavericks will play back to back with another home game tomorrow. They have the opportunity to finish the series in the next two games by winning the next two nights. Mason McDonald has been key for the Mavericks and has a 2.86 GAA going into game four with a .922 save percentage.

Tulsa picks up a handful of penalties in the first period and KC makes it hurt. Mark Cooper gets his third goal of the series and the first of the night just mere seconds into a power play and the Mavericks hold that lead to go into the second period.

The top line of Durocher, Cooper and VanWormer absolutely dominated this period. However, Perfetto of the Oilers found a way to get around the defence and scores on the breakaway. Beating McDonald on his blocker side. The game does not stay tied for long when Rocco Carzo attacks and rebound and buries it. The Mavericks lead 20-13 in shots after two periods of play and lead 2-1 on the scoreboard.

Tulsa crawls back once again. They have proved in this series how they are not a team that shuts down and that is likely how they clinched the mountain division. No team can feel comfortable with a goal lead. Especially in the playoffs. Jared Thomas gets one past McDonald in the opening five minutes of the third and this game gets tied up at 2. This game takes a turn in the last five minutes when Adam Pleskach scores the go ahead goal. In the last two minutes, John-Scott Dickson calls McDonald to the bench and Tulsa scores on the empty net. Mark Cooper with 1:01 left to go in regulation gets a goal back but it is not quite enough. Mavericks fall in game 4, 4-3 and Tulsa ties the series 2-2.

Who would've thought Mason McDonald (6th string goalie) would be the only remaining Flames player under contract playing in the post season this year?

Go Mason!!
