Flames Duhatschek: Johnny Gaudreau feels at home in Calgary

...and winning may be the Flames’ best hope of keeping it that way.

Great new piece on the Athletic:

https://theathletic.com/1209321/2019...g-it-that-way/

Quote:
The question – of Gaudreau’s long-term plans – came up during an Athletic live Q&A just before NHL training camps opened, and I promised a reader that if I could get a private moment alone with Gaudreau, I’d ask him that question:

Even as far out as his next contract negotiation may seem, has Gaudreau given any thought to digging in for the long haul; and maybe ending up as a Flame for life?

“That’d be awesome,” Gaudreau answered. “Yeah, hopefully. There’s a good relationship going on between Brad (Treliving, the Flames GM) and my agent (Lewis Gross). I love playing here in Calgary. It’s like a second home to me. I love playing with Gio (Mark) Giordano and Monny (Monahan). If I could keep playing with them for the rest of my career, I would, so … yeah, it’s probably a really good possibility.”

But I thought it was a given that Johnny wanted to be traded to Philly or New Jersey

My favourite takeaway is that Gaudreau apparently calls his captain "Gio Giordano"

I've never really understood why people think players will want to go 'home.'

After 10 years, who would want to uproot the life they've established and move? Kids are in school, wife is involved in the community, you have a certain comfort level. Is that not what 'home' is?

Marrying a local girl might cause him to put down roots too.

It’s just as likely for a pro hockey player to settle down with an American girl who wants to move to New York or California.

I have said all along he isn't going anywhere. Not only does he love Calgary who have gone above and beyond for him but I think he likes the Canadian market hockey craze. Combine that with the good young core here and a real shot at owning some franchise records when all is said and done and I think he plays almost his entire career here. He might do a year or two in Philly near the end of his career but for the most part he will be a lifer in Calgary.

Considering how crazy in-shape and dedicated Giordano is, Johnny had better stay in shape if he hopes to play as long as Gio does.

Treliving has a good relationship with Lewis Gross? Crazy.

Gaudreau doesn’t need to play in Philly but it is not shocking that people think and American superstar from the North East US would want to play in one of those large markets in the area as opposed to small market western Canada.

Gaudreau May be loyal to his teammates and the organization for taking a chance on him. I have to say that article definitely gives me some hope he stays beyond his current deal

I would suggest that it is more the volume of skittles consumed.

Funny that he calls it his second home. And maybe he likes it that way, which I can understand as he is a young guy still. But yeah, things change for people once they have a family.
