No. With 23 players and Roussel on IR, it was more like 9. Of course that doesn't factor in ELC bonuses so they did need the room.

Roussel is still expected to be back this year though. I know it's the Canucks so the chances of them having Edler, Tanev, Baertschi, Boesser, Sutter, and Eriksson healthy at the time Roussel is ready to go is slim, but with that slim chance they are all healthy, how does such a crappy team (who's best player makes sub million) not have the cap-space? Ha.

I think there will be trades in the up coming weeks.
the Canucks have a log jam at forwards before Boeser signed.
Ferland - Pettersson - Boeser
Pearson - Horvat - JT Miller
Beartschi - Sutter - Gaudette
Virtanen - Beagle - Goldobin
Roussel - Motte - Leivo
oh and Eriksson...

I can’t imagine the bottom guys there have any trade value.

Looks like Utica could use the help.

I wouldn't call it a steal by any means but it seems reasonable.

Good deal for the Canucks. Hopefully this all leads to Tkachuk signing soon. Aside for Marner all the RFAs have signed reasonable deals

3 years isn't a bad term for Boeser since he won't be a UFA for 5 years.
But if I am the Nucks, I would be looking for long term deals because they won't be competitive in the next couple years anyway. I would be trying to get key guys locked up for a long time so that the cap can catch up to their deals.

Have to admit, great value for the Canucks. But I guess the short term does that.
Risky thing for them is that they likely won't be a top end team during those 3 years, so he'll be up for a new deal by the time they become a competitor (if they do).

Well, they have to make the playoffs in the next two years to avoid giving up a lottery pick.
The main thing that differentiates this from the Werenski and McAvoy bridges (other than forwards getting more money in general) is that those guys have the option of accepting their Qualifying Offer and just going straight to free agency, no?

McAvoy has two years experience I think, he should still be RFA for 2 years after his current contract expires.

They have traded their first round pick this year to Tampa. However, if they miss the playoffs, Tampa gets next year's first rounder instead. So if they miss the playoffs in the next two seasons, Tampa will get a top 16 pick.
I'm just saying they're incentivized to win, just like the Flames are, but for a different reason. The Flames are contenders. So a deal like this for Tkachuk might not be the worst idea ever, if you really want to take a run at the next 3-4 years while Gio's still around and Sean and Johnny are still on cheap deals.

Virtanen won't make the club. They're not happy with him.

Hope Calgary doesn't do a deal like this.
Too risky with the puffy final year on the contract. If Boeser wants to go home to the U.S. he can just sign his QO and make himself a UFA in four years.
Why GMs are jumping on this model is beyond me.

Boeser cannot actually. He was a 10.2c RFA who has only two years of NHL service, and is still five years away from UFA.
