Gillies has to be glad he was able to sign a 1-way and still get the $750k in the A.

Every single year, people over-react to the play of goalies in the pre-season. And every year, most of the pre-season performances tend to be nothing like the regular season. And every year, people say, "we shouldn't make too big of a deal about pre-season games". But every year they follow that up with comments like "but he was bad and his career is probably done".

Every. Year.

What do you have to say to those that point to his very poor regular season in the AHL last year. His 3rd full season as a pro after 4 years in college. Is there no reason to be concerned at all? It's not like he's giving us stretches or even flashes of great play.

Hmm well you'd think the Flames would want Zagidulin and Parsons to be the AHL tandem, so the ECHL probably a better option for his career than not playing at all

Jordan Binnington played in the ECHL, so it's not a death knell

Enoch’s position is that we can never be too patient with Gillies.

Unfortunately, history shows us that the Gillies ship has likely sailed. There’s still some hope, but the number of goaltenders who emerge to have even average NHL careers from where Gillies is today is very very small.

I honestly feel the Flames did this to reward him however was hoping it would challenge him

Look up 4 posts.

But again, goalies are a longer and bumpier progression than defensemen, who are a longer and bumpier progression than forwards. Yet people always seem surprised by it.

I am not saying he has been great, or that he is a given for the NHL or anything outrageous like that. I am simply saying that people are often too quick to write-off goalies. Especially from a single pre-season game.

He's a free option (well a $700K option).

He won't get claimed so he will have the year to play somewhere and see if he can make a move. Last night didn't look good, and he did nothing to turn things around for himself, but the game was sloppy and a tough one for goaltenders.

See where it goes. Lots of late blooming goaltender stories.

With Gillies it’s not so much the pre-season as pretty much his entire Flames career to date. He just hasn’t proven he can be a steady starter. He’s had some hot streaks and some cold streaks, but he has never shown the steady progression you’d like to see from a prospect.

So where will Gillies play this year to prove himself?

Stockton, I would imagine. I don’t think Gillies will accept an assignment to the ECHL.

Probably Stockton.

I'd guess that the plan was to put Zagidulin in the ECHL to help get acclimated to the North American game. With the way he has played so far, that might not be necessary. Since he's on an ELC, they could still put him in the ECHL to get playing time.

If they decide that Zagidulin should be in the AHL, they'll probably look to loan Gillies to another team's AHL affiliate.

I bet there is no chance Zagidulin would accept a demotion to ECHL he would return to KHL.

My guess Zagidulin & Parsons will play in Stockton and Gillies is loaned to another AHL team.
