Default Buying A New Truck

I recently decided to lock myself down as a true Albertan and invest in a truck.

Problem is, I know almost nothing about trucks.

Who makes a great truck?
Am I better going new, or used?
How much towing capacity do I need (if I wanted to tow a small camper)?
Should I get bed liner?
Is there something your truck has that has been great?
Is there something you wish your truck had?

I'm not going to be doing much hauling, I don't live on a farm, I don't even really need a truck specifically (except to tow some light camping setup). It's just what I want.

So... any recommendations?

By the end of this song you'll know what to do.

The new Honda Ridgeline, when it comes out next month, would be a stellar choice.

He's looking for a truck.

For a more serious reply, what do you want the truck for? Towing? Off roading? Taking up two spaces at the mall?

Just don't park like a dick and we'll be fine.

Thinking about getting a truck as well; options are currently the GMC Sierra 3500HD Denali, or Toyota Tundra Limited.

Light hauling, camping. General outdoors stuff and while I won't need the truck itself for off-roading, 4x4 is a must I think (for winter?).

Really, I'd like to be able to pull a smaller trailer/camper/etc and it's got to be four door. Those are my only requirements.

I'm fully aware of that.

The Ridgeline is currently the top-rated truck on the market. You'd be foolish to not at least consider it.

Or is there some against-unibody bias here?

Anywho, what's your budget, PepsiFree? Because you don't want to buy a used Ridgeline, they're ugly as sin, and the new Ridgeline starts at $30k, IIRC. I just know that CarAndDriver has it ranked #1 it its class, ahead of all of the Canyon and the Tacoma and the Chevy Colorado.

If I was in the market for another truck to do truck things, a unibody like a ridge line would be out of the question.

A 1976 el Camino would prove more capable.

US, maybe. CDN MSRP is 37k for a base model.

I love the Int of the new F-150, if they get rid of the ugly headlights and clean up the exhaust it'll be one of the best trucks ever.

For size.
Spoiler!

I have an older Tundra crewmax and I like it, but they are expensive.

A small trailer would likely be no issue for any half ton, their towing capacity are all pretty similar.

I'm getting a new truck this week. I've test driven a Ram, Sierra, F-150 and just on Saturday a Tundra. The Tundra drove worse than any of the others by a wide margin and was the most expensive. Plus it's really outdated.

The F-150 was nice, but I'm just getting out of a 2012 and I don't think they did enough in their redesign a couple years ago to get me excited about it so I'm going for GMC this time (the new grill looks sick, too). I kind of like it's subtle looks, too.

I did like the Ram, but I couldn't seem to hornswoggle a good deal. I always hear about how cheap they are, but I'm getting way more truck with the GMC for a better deal than the Dodge. Plus I won't have to put up with owning a crappy Dodge.

The Ridgeline is embarrassingly fugly. Honda shizined the bed on that design yet again.

Any truck (and most SUVs) can do all of that. Beyond that you'll get a bunch of personal opinions.

What is your budget?

he says he wants to tow. The Honda would struggle to pull anything bigger than a tent trailer.

The guy said he doesn't really need a truck, or do anything over the top with it. He needs a 4x4 and to maybe haul a small camper. A Ridgeline will allow you to do that, and pretty much everything else that your average city-dwelling citizen actually will do with it... with much better ride and handling characteristics, Honda reliability, and in a smaller manageable package that isn't a pain in the ass to park.

But yeah, there's no Sam Elliot telling you that you're only a real man if you drive an oversized Tonka with 100 pounds of chrome belt buckle on the front... so it's clearly not a truck.

It only tows 5000? Might as well get a med-sized SUV.

You can tow up 3500 comfortably but you'll burn fuel like mad.

It has a 5000 pound rating. Sure if you want to haul something huge its not the right truck, but there are plenty of smaller campers in the 3000 range....my parents tow one with a Caravan just fine.

Many trucks come with a built in brake controller, that's always nice instead of buying an aftermarket and deciding where to place it.
