It is surprising that none of Poirier, Rychel, Shinkaruk, Lazar, Klimchuk have all failed to make it to date. I remember this first round had a tone of hype and it appears there are a lot of busts outside the top 10

I wanted Monahan from the start. I saw someone with franchise player potential. I never saw that potential in Lindholm, who I believe was also drafted a C. The Flames were in desperate need of a top-end C and the only realistic choice with pick #6 was Monahan.
But now we have both in their primes, so it doesn't even matter!

There always are. The bust rate in the first round is like 50%

I wonder how much of that was the fact that the Flames had more firsts round picks in 2013 than they had in 2010 / 2011 / 2012 combined, including our first top ten pick since 2003 (and tying our three then-highest picks).

I don’t think Vinny was meaning hyped by Calgary fans/CP he was meaning in general the 2013 draft was considered a deep draft especially in the 1st round and had some experts thinking it would rival the 2003 draft that had an insane hit rate for good to great NHL talent in the first Round.

I remember 2013 more as hyped for the four really good centres plus Jones in the top 5, plus then you had Risto, Nurse, Drouin and Horvat expected to do great things. Out of the top ten, I'd say only Drouin, Nikushkin and maybe Nurse have underperformed.
I don't recall much about guys like Lazar, Gauthier, Mantha or Shinkaruk other than their high end being "solid NHLer".

Drouin established himself pretty early in the year as part of the Big Three with Jones and Mackinnon. Barkov rounded out the top four.
Nichushkin was a wildcard due to the Russian Factor but was expected to be right there in the next tier with Monahan and Lindholm, with many considering him the best hockey player of the bunch but an added risk. Ristolainen and Nurse were considered solid defensive picks in that tier. Maybe with the occasional mention of Zadorov.
Horvat was actually considered a reach at the time, not a ton mind you, but there wasn't many mock drafts having him at 9 or better. He was also considered more of a safe pick and expected to go in that 10-15 range (but you could find mock drafts with him in the 20s).
Domi was another player mentioned to be a top 10 pick. And finally, Shinkaruk was usually hyped and was expected to go in the top 15.

I guess my point was that the "busts" of that first round weren't in the top half and the high end predicted for the players took a massive drop after, say, Nikushkin.
You are correct about Drouin - he was right up there with Jones and MacKinnon in discussions.
I recall Barkov being more in the Lindholm/Monahan grouping, but I'm probably wrong about that. It was, I recall, quite a shock that he was picked over Jones. Lots of people were ranking Jones and Mackinnon fairly even and it was a C versus D choice.

Shinkaruk was thought to be a top 10 pick by many, due to his elite release and hands. It was a surprise when he dropped but now we see why.
Mantha was another guy who seemed to have really good skills in a couple areas, but lots of concerns about his overall game and if it would translate.
