Nylander will be ineligible to play this season if unsigned by December 1st, 17 days.

But the big difference is that Toronto has a number of elite or near elite players.
Edmonton's big problem isn't really their cap they paid these guys, it's the fact that they don't have very good players after their top 3 players.

That seems like a slap offer. Why would he sign 5 for 3 if he'll likely outperform that salary this year let alone in years 2 and 3. I think he's right to hold out and make the leafs trade him.

They don't have to trade him though...and if Im Dubas I stick to my guns and let him sit unless a "blow my socks off" type thing comes along.

Nylander is, like, the Leafs' fifth-best player
Matthews
Tavares
Marner
Rielly
Nylander
Hell, Kadri's there too.

I wouldn't include Kadri, but if someone argued Andersen right now, they probably wouldn't be wrong.

Let's get him, package up Brodie, Stone, someone, and someone. That's at least 7+ mill freed up.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Tkachuk is staring down a $7M contract next season, we'll need another goalie (2 actually, neither is signed beyond this year) and Bennett may or may not need extending.
Flames can't afford Nylander.
Of course if that was sarcasm then allow me to woosh myself.

That's great and all until he calls your bluff and signs in the KHL for the next couple seasons, which I guarantee will happen if Dubas tries to play hardball with him.

Neal, Andersson, and a pick. I don't know if Toronto would be interested. But they get a replacement for Nylander at a cap they can afford. They also get a good young RH D.
In our case we can probably afford Andersson with Valimaki/Hanafin/Kylington in that age range and Stone available. The pick hurts but we get a young core piece back.
I think Toronto will find a better fit if they trade Nylander. But this is a potential trade that could work.

I wouldn’t want to see Andersson traded who is basically our single greatest assets for RHD going forward and has shown very good early into what looks to be his rookie season and optically trading Neal after just signing him is a fine line to walk when considering trying to sign veteran UFA’s going forward.
The leafs will be wanting a good value forward signed at least for one more year or young RFA (one of Jankowski, Bennett, Czarnik) A top right side D (one of Hamonic, Brodie) a 1st round pick and most likely other futures as well.
I think the Leafs have let this go too long though and the absolute last thing they should do is let this go on past December 1st... time is of the essence now.

As an asset (not as a player), Nylander is depreciating every day. He's not a prospect anymore; he hasn't got that much room left to improve offensively, and nobody can predict how he'll turn out with defence or intangibles. In other words, most of his potential upside is already baked into the calculations of his value.
On the debit side of the ledger, every day he gets closer to UFA status, closer to the end of his career, and closer to the point where his abilities start to decline. You can't just look at the credit side if you're going to sign him for seven or eight years and give up other major assets to acquire him. The debit side keeps growing, and that is why he is necessarily a depreciating asset.
In the long term, all the assets of a hockey team depreciate, and you can't be buying them at a price that doesn't take that into account. That's how you end up with Milan Lucic on your fourth line.

per Dreger, Leafs want two roster players back for Nylander. A top 4 d-man and a top 9 forward.

Why? He wouldn't be the first player traded early. A Nylander deal doesn't work if we keep Neal. It probably doesn't work anyway, but if it is going to then Neal needs to be in the deal.

And these guys need to have very good contracts moving forward. My guess is the return won’t be what they want unless the value comes in prospects or picks
I wonder if a team like NYI could get in on this maybe get a bit of revenge on the leafs.
Eberle Hickey and 2nd for Nylander and Horton
