Ousted Ukrainian leader warns of civil war; Russia adds to forces
Quote:
MOSCOW -- Ukraine is on the verge of civil war, warned ousted President Viktor Yanukovich, who reemerged in the Russian southern city of Rostov-on-the-Don to make a statement more than a week after his first news conference in Russia.
Quote:
Russia has deployed a force of 220,000 troops, 1,800 tanks and over 400 helicopters close to Ukraine's border. Its neighbor has about 41,000 troops, of which only 6,000 were “really combat ready,” Ukraine's acting Defense Minister Igor Tenyukh told the national parliament Tuesday, UNIAN news agency reported.
It's not really civil war when the Russians are the fighters on one side.

If I'm reading it correctly, Crimea has no ability to dissolve itself from Ukraine...which raises a much larger question: What exactly is this referendum for?
As long, as OSCE isn't monitoring it, referendum is for nothing but propaganda. Maybe it is merely a mean to make Crimea's government equally as legal, as Ukrainian's one. Both seized power illegally and both are set to win "referendum".
He meant a lot of pro-Russian, including ethnic Russians, citizens of Ukraine against anti-Russian citizens of Ukraine.
Yeah, with the unmarked, masked "non" russian soldiers too...
Sorry, I don't believe your government, nor the idiot that is pro russia which means he's just as bad as Putin.

Neighbourhood countries always join into the civil wars though, either directly or via funding and weapon supplies. Nothing new and it is still a "civil war" as long, as the nation (Ukraine in this case) is divided enough, which is what Yanukovich implies.
And of course most Russians, myself included, realize that those masked "non-russian" soldiers are Russian soldiers.
Russian bloggers widely discuss a US pilotless jet was allegedly shot down in the sky of Crimea.
Also Russian media says, Crimea authorities did officially invite OSCE to monitor the referendum, but OSCE declined, claiming that it is illegal anyway.

I think we get that. But I think that it's fairly obvious Moscow is pushing the civil war more than anyone else (any other group).
If the people inside the country really want to fight then fine. But Putin and Moscow picked a side and stirred the pot even before the fight broke out.

How many of these "pro-russian crimeans" are actually russians who have been bussed accross the border to make it look like there is more support for joining Russia?
These Vice News dispatches are really great. However, as I am watching them I am getting the feeling that Simon and his crew should get the hell out of Crimea. That last one was particularly bad.

I think is passport is what he is hiding behind.
It wouldn't surprise me if the fella that ran didn't have a US or UK passport. He knew better and got the hell out.
Jets4Life posted a picture of a newly constructed minefield a couple days ago and I am kind of surprised it hasn't been discussed. Kind of funny that the Russians are just there to "help" Crimea and are laying minefields.

Just for some context though, there are actually only 5 Serbian militiamen there doing this and they certainly aren't there promoting Serbian interests. These are their version of hillbillies. Not that Serbs and Russians don't have a long standing cultural alliance, because they do, but I doubt there is much desire in Belgrade to become involved in something like this. On the street level, there might be and there would likely be more volunteers if war did break out, but at a policy level, probably not.
Serbia has their own issues with Kosovo which would be complicated if they recognized a referendum of independence in another country by a national minority in an autonomous area where they are a slight majority. I imagine the leaders in Serbia are cringing at the thought of these 5 guys making the news.

Mines are pretty standard Eastern block approach to anything. It can be removed pretty easy by those that put it down.
