Default Batch 1 correction

Folks
Unfortunately we need to make a correction to batch 1 of free agency
You'll recall that in our instructions, we stated that in order for offers to be valid, all players on 1 way contracts needed to be in the CPHL. This is the only way for people to be bidding under the same restraints.

We have realized that Vancouver had Eddie Lack, who is on a 1 way, in the AHL.

As such we are ruling his batch 1 offers invalid
What this means
- Kris Letang will be awarded to the Hurricanes, who were the only other team to bid for Letang. 3yrs @ 1.00M 1-Way (100% AHL).
- Alex Steen, surprisingly, received no other bids in Batch 1, and will be added to batch 3.

I want to emphasize that there was no intent on Vancouver's part, just an unfortunate oversight.

Questions?

Seems pretty harsh for an unintentional mistake that I had brought up myself to clarify. Can't see Eddie Lack's $1.5 salary drastically affecting either of my two bids.

That Letang deal might be the best non ELC deal in the league, holy

Unfortunate for Van but rules are rules, I guess

Ouch. That's a stinger. Sucks for the Canucks for sure.

If we aren't going to follow the rules what's the point of them?
I specifically pointed out this item in the instructions.
I know you didn't do it on purpose but I don't see how we can set that as a rule, with a clear outcome attached to it (offers are voided) and then simply ignore it?

Can we put it to a league vote?

I feel like as long as Vancouver would have still been under the cap with Lack, Letang, and Steen on the roster at the time of the bid then at least a league vote should determine what we do there.

That or throw Letang back into the pot at least as well for another round of bidding.

I would say that rule is in place to prevent GMs from stashing high-salary players in the AHL freeing up cap space for them to bid on UFAs. Which is not the case here.
I moved him to AHL and beside his salary it said (10%) which is the same as all my other contracts down there and I thought nothing more of it.
I think most GMs here don’t know 100% of the rules for this game, I’m still relatively new (only been playing for 2 years) and clearly I can misinterpreted the rules sometimes. There’s quite a lot to understand and this wasn’t an intentional abuse of the rules. However, I think this does discourages GMs (especially new ones) from reaching out to the Commissioners for clarifications and questions.

I had $11.34 in cap at the time of the bidding, my total bids were $10.8, so with Lack (1.5) up I would have had to decrease one of my bids. No one else bid on Steen and it seems unlikely I would have lost to Carolina’s 3year x $1.0 bid for Letang.

It’s a shame really, DTMB did a great job on those UFA bids. Still, he broke the rule and the punishment is clearly defined. I don’t know. I wouldn’t mind seeing him get a pass on this but then it’s not really fair to Doug who did everything by the rules.

This is why we pay Jiri the big bucks. Tough call

ouch.

Rules are rules - totally support that.

with that said, I think you take Lacks salary and reduce any of Vans winning bids by that 1.5M/yr. if he still has the high bid then let him keep the player. If not, he gives them up. hate to set a precedent for that though, which I'm sure is where the league is coming from.

crumby situation.

Just to be clear, I never make these decisions on my own. It is always a group decision within the commissioner team
In the case of UFA bidding, the only way the system works is if everyone is playing by the same rules. I try very hard to outline those rules each year, and almost every year someone misses something.
I also don't view this as a punishment, as that implies that he did something intentionally wrong. I merely look at this as applying the rules as we communicated them. To not do that indeed sets a very dangerous precedent. When do we choose to apply the rules and when do we choose to ignore them?

Exactly. This is the right call and a lesson for everyone. Teams have come back from worse breaks.

Well, I’m pretty sure he is going to take Steen back to Vancouver on this next batch. He may not get a Letang but DTMB can definitely land a decent 2nd or 3rd pairing Dman to boot.

All is not lost.

How is it even possible to put a 1 way in the AHL? Seems like a bug in the system

Ideally it wouldn’t be possible
But we have limited dev support

No, I get that I’m just curious if it was just overlooked when it was originally done or was there one point where sending 1 ways was allowed?

That goes back even before my time
Ideally in my view the way it would ideally work is you could send a one way down but the cap would still go against your nhl cap
