A very tiny part of Oregon does. As soon as you move away from Portland/Bend/The Gorge, Oregon is largely a barren redneck hell-hole. Same with massive swaths of Washington.

You'll find that, to a lesser degree, all over the Pacific Northwest. Oregon is more extreme version of what you see in BC. Lots of hippies on the coast and in scattered town across the territory. Then as you get further inwards, lots of rednecks with confederate flags on their trucks. Oregon is so libertarian that the extremes are far more extreme. The hippies are real hippie, the DIY food scene is better, and the rednecks are far more rednecky.

Oregon's a funny place. You got bumper sticker loving hippies on the left, rednecks on the right, and the rest work for Nike or Adidas.

Default Canmore population to double? Legal battle?

All I know is roads are beautiful with mostly traffic circles and they all have bike lanes. Can bike on the roads or pathways almost everywhere. Quick bike to the Old Mill District with loads of river front restaurants, park space, amphitheater, etc. Pretty sure most neighbourhoods have some sort of HOA, because every yard is beautiful. Manicured lawns and gardens. Guessing real estate prices are insane, like Canmore, but without the a-hole attitude.

if Canmore was like this it would be a real destination.

Sunriver is the more "touristy" place nearby, but I prefer it to Bend. Lots of vacation rentals and what not, but miles of bike paths throughout.

Usually camp at a state park about 20 mile south of Bend/10 miles south of Sunriver.

Was just going by Nanton on Monday. Can confirm it's just Canmore without the mountains... lol

Was renting out our below average Canmore condo for the past 5 years at a crazy $1600 to $1800/month.

Well Canmore real estate is still insanely hot.

Was painting my unit and a realtor was walking by and we chit chatted for 5 mins. Said he had a buyer and we sold it in 2 hours without the buyer even looking at it. It didn't even make it to the MLS.

We wanted to try the air bnb route but our condo complex doesn't allow it.

Canmore has released plans for a fireguard to the west of the town up to the park gates:

Years ago I talked with a senior AB travel-focused politician around the travel industry and how we had a tourism problem.

Everybody sees Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, but the rest of the province doesn't see any of the benefit.

Even worse, it's too crowded and too expensive to go in the Canmore to Jasper corridor. The visitor experience is being ruined.

I shared a few ideas about how we can bring more prosperity to Alberta by strategically investing in the type of travel that brings people to Alberta.

I don't think he had ever hiked, skied, cycled or rafted. He was totally clueless about how unique and special Alberta is.

The solutions are simple and cheap.
1. build out the infrastructure (hiking / cycling trails) so that Crowsnest, Diamond Valley, etc become legitimate spots to be based and explore the mountains.

2. Create provincial bike routes that mimic the Jasper to Banff trip. Loops out to drumheller / badlands, down the front-range, etc. Use existing underutilized tertiary roads and lower speeds like 1A. Make some gravel and some road.

3. Allow world-class environmental infrastructure to be built in the mountains. Easy wins are more camping, but also consider serviced mountain huts that are perfect for lunch after a day-hike, or to string together for a backpack/ski tour. Right now we have limited huts and have super basic ACC huts and luxury huts. We need a middle.

4. Build more user-maintained places, like West Bragg. But make sure you then don't use those places to clear-cut or build mineral processing facilities.

Anyways, we're so close, just need a politician who has vision and understands the opporutnity.

Tourists want the best mountain views from their hotel rooms to catch a glimpse of the latest wild animal they saw on TikTok.

They'll then need a gondola stop right at the hotel front door that takes them down to get on the monorail over to a wooded area where they can pose for their homeless cosplay Insta photo.

Then pop into Sliver's for brunch to get a picture of his famous candy charcuterie board omelette to post on Facebook for the likes.

After that, down to the river to pretend to kayak before piling on the next ConservativeParty Rail train to YYC.

Sliver for Mayor of this new mountain town.

Each one of those is the worst idea ever. They only cater to fit people, interested in grueling outdoor activities, are only really accessible/usable half or two-thirds of the year, and only to people in a certain age band. Seniors and people who aren't fit and in possession of a bunch of gear can't do them.

That's not what we need at all. There are a bazillion trails everywhere. It's fine.

What we need are a town or towns with infrastructure (restaurants, hotels, bars/nightlife, doctors, shopping, gondolas, etc. etc.). You need somewhere to allow visitors to recreate regardless of age and/or physical fitness. You need summer recreation opportunities and winter recreation opportunities (e.g. ski hills with hotels/condos/chairlifts). You need easy access to views and natural features.

I've loved - and lived in - the mountains off and on forever. Moved out to Lake Louise the day after my 18th birthday for a six-month stint. Hiking to some stupid hut 24km into the backwoods is my idea of hell. Throwing on my skins and marching over some big-ass mountain sounds awful. Whitewater rafting is super fun...for a few-hour trip every four years.

Honestly, sounds like what you want is an extra parking lot beside one of the 1000 trailheads scattered literally everywhere in the mountains.

We're talking about a tourist town for everyone to recreate...not just fit people between 18 and 54 who don't shower and enjoy digging holes to #### in.

That's bull####, Sliver. My dad and all his friends are seniors and do all sorts of active stuff.

What Sliver really needs is a Vegas style Sphere that projects all the stuff he wants to see while he sits at a table and doesn't actually have to interact with nature at all. Build it in Calgary and he won't even have to drive. We should do that, for all the Slivers of the world, and leave the real outdoor communities for those that actually want to be outdoors.

Ya, shots fired.
