Default Pre-season predictions

Is there anyone out there that saved any of the professionals preseason predictions for this year? I would love to see just how wrong most of them were. Any help with this would be awesome, thank you in advance.

Lol. I predicted the Flames to win the SMYTHE, Gaudreau and Tkachuk to have over 100 points, 3 guys over 40 goals and the defense to have over 35goals.

Prove me wrong!

I'll just admit it. I predicted they would be a bottom 10 team. My bad.

Ohhh... I actually said bottom 5 in that thread. I think I said bottom 10 somewhere else. Anyway, feels good to be proven wrong!

I never made a posted prediction but my best hopes for this team were making it in one of the wildcard positions. First In the division over Vegas seemed impossible.

I would have guessed VGK, LAK, SWEATPANTS for 1 2 3 and flames 4th.

Very disappointed in having as much faith as anyone in Darryl Sutter but still coming up short.

This post basically just shows the incredible impact of Darryl Sutter and why I'm so optimistic compared to most Flames fans.

The Flames, under Darryl Sutter, had the following numbers (among all NHL teams) once he took over (all were SIGNIFICANT improvements over Ward):

Offensively:

- 55.95 CF/60 (8th)
- 42.72 FF/60 (7th)
- 29.52 SF/60 (11th)
- 2.68 GF/60 (9th)
- 2.22 xGF/60 (11th)
- 26.64 SCF/60 (9th)
- 9.90 HDCF/60 (14th)

Defensively:

- 45.73 CA/60 (2nd)
- 35.01 FA/60 (2nd)
- 25.11 SA/60 (3rd)
- 2.31 GA/60 (14th)
- 1.77 xGA/60 (2nd)

- 21.65 SCA/60 (3rd)
- 7.67 HDCA/60 (1st)

Overall:

- 55.03 CF% (2nd)
- 54.96 FF% (4th)
- 54.04 SF% (8th)
- 55.58 xGF% (3rd)
- 55.17 SCF% (5th)
- 56.34 HDCF% (3rd)
- 90.80 SV% (26th)

To Recap:

- The Flames were a top 10 offensive team once Sutter took over
- The Flames were a top 3 defensive team once Sutter took over
- The Flames were a top 5 overall team once Sutter took over
- Goaltending was absolute garbage

The most important statistics shown there are the bolded, which shows how badly the goaltending was, which absolutely destroyed the Flames' season. Even remotely average goaltending would've had the Flames comfortably in a Playoff spot last season.

I don't expect Markstrom to be anywhere as bad as he was last season post-injury, which again, adds to my optimism as he has the capability of being an elite #1.

I also expect even better numbers analytically (or at least similar, even despite some of the losses this offseason) + a much more comfortable team with a FULL training camp of Darryl Sutter, which I think is incredibly important.

Add in Sutter-type players like Zadorov, Pitlick, Lewis and especially Coleman, and I'm very excited to see what this team does next year, because this is the first time since, well, probably Sutter that the Flames have had a true identity.

They're going to be a hard-nosed, possession monster team that takes s*** from no one and grinds out W's while giving up next to nothing defensively.

This next part is super important so people don't mistake this post as me saying the Flames have an incredible team.

On paper, the Flames definitely don't have a top team, but Darryl Sutter is truly one of the few coaches that has legitimate incredible impacts on the teams he coaches.

Plus, I don't think the Flames' offseason is remotely over based on everything that's been reported, but even if this current roster is the one we head into next season with, the Flames are in a great spot based on last years numbers after Sutter took over, and if you know Darryl Sutter hockey, he works absolute magic in the Playoffs as lower seeds.

I would not be shocked in the slightest if the Flames finish 2nd in the Pacific behind Vegas. In fact, I think I'd be more surprised if they finished lower than 2nd.

Darryl Sutter.

The defense will be interesting to watch. I'm not as down on Andersson as many here are and I'm a bit surprised at how down folks seem to be on a 24 year old after one bad season. I see a bounce back for him as bad years for young players happen. Giordano is a huge hole though, so if I were to bet, I'm guessing we'll see plenty of rotation on the backend all year long on the bottom pair and 2nd pair, LH slot.

Overall, the Flames will be a tougher team to play against, they'll bring a more consistent game more often and I see them in a playoff spot in the end. I also think the Flames end up getting Eichel.
Bang on about Andersson (never did understand why everyone was convinced he sucked after 1 bad year). Wrong about Eichel and Monahan.

Notice a lot of names that dont post anymore...pretty sad to only post when things are overly negative. Pretty telling really.

They don't really have an elite #1 goalie either, and likely don't have one in the pipeline.

They will need to build a really deep and well balanced line up in order to have a legit cup contender, but that will be hard to do when they waste so much cap on Treliving's misses all the time, and with core wingers being due for big raises coming up.

Yes, they should tear it down but they wont.

Our only hope to get an elite C is to trade for Eichel and hope his neck holds up.
D will have to be built by committee, unless something falls out of the sky.
Need Markstrom to hold up as a strong #1 into his mid 30's.

Really seems like a long shot to me.

They should really be able to kick start a rebuild off properly by dealing Tkachuk, Monahan and Gaudreau though, before it's too late. Lindholm would also bring a haul, and then it'd be several years of pain again.

But it's be pretty pain all the time anyways.

My faith in Sutter was not strong enough.

Tortorella was the only one out of 22 experts on ESPN who picked the Flames to win the Pacific.

It looks like only 3/22 of these experts chose teams that even made the playoffs.

Wow.

Pretty sure I predicted flames fighting for last wild card spot. At the time I thought the defence would be junk and no secondary scoring from forwards. Also wasn’t sold that Sutter could get this core to its full potential. Boy was I ever wrong . Lol

Scientists worldwide have placed all crow species on the endangered list due to an unprecedented increase in crow consumption. Those threads are probably the reason.
