Matthieu Gomercic and Nick Shumlanski were at the vigil in Humboldt last night.

Driving home today in Edmonton and they had Chris Joseph talking about his son Jaxon. That was hard to listen to. I never want to know how hard it would be to be the person talking about this.

Brett Kulak’s mother called Monday morning to deliver the gut-wrenching news.

Kulak was raised in Stony Plain, Alta., a small town now mourning the loss of one of their own after a misidentification in the Humboldt Broncos bus crash.

Eighteen-year-old goaltender Parker Tobin was initially listed among the survivors of the terrible tragedy but the coroner apologized Monday, revealing he was among the dead and that another player, Xavier Labelle, was in fact fighting in hospital.

“My parents were good friends with his parents, so I can’t even imagine how they’re feeling. It’s just horrific,” Kulak said Monday at the Saddledome, where the 24-year-old defenceman and his Calgary Flames teammates cleaned out their locker-stalls after a playoff miss.

“You can’t take your mind off of it. You keep circling back to it in your thoughts. It’s unthinkable what happened.”

Kulak played minor hockey for a few seasons with Tobin’s older brother, Kaiden.

“I can remember going over to Kaiden’s house when we were younger and playing mini-sticks downstairs with his brother. (Parker) was really young at the time,” Kulak said. “He was always a happy kid, a laughy kid, always smiling and playing with us.”

I just want to post on the misidentification, from a health practitioner's perspective. It's just a terrible situation to begin with, and everybody understands that this adds a whole other level of emotional strain to the community and to families. Anybody involved in these trauma situations inherently understands the emotional impact of identification and notifying families. Without going into details, identification can be very difficult, even with living patients. Especially in the acute stage of a trauma situation, your focus is on applying every ounce of your time and resources on helping the injured. I have not been involved in a code orange yet, but I can only imagine that the experience would be overwhelming to anybody, regardless of training. I am sure that the premature identification was a product of the resource strain and general difficulty of the task in situations like this, and not a result of carelessness or lack of competence.

In health care, every mistake that causes suffering lingers in your mind. Normally you worry about how those mistakes affect the patient, more than the family. We all think about the players and their families first, as we should, but now that this has marinated in my mind for a few days, and from the perspective of my profession, I also worry for the mental effect on first responders and anyone else involved in the care of these boys. I am grateful that these providers did their best that day, and that we have a health system in Canada that can provide acute care to so many people after an accident in such a remote location. The quality and availability of care provided here is not universally provided around the world. The mistake is a terrible situation, but I remain fiercely proud of everybody involved in providing care throughout this tragedy.

Timely article on the CBC Saskatchewan website addressing this exact thought.

GoFundme now approaching 8 million. It's nice that with today's technology people can do something meaningful for the survivors and families.

Heard yesterday at this time that the gofundme drive was the fourth largest in GFM history, with the others all related to U.S. shootings (Vegas number one at $11.8 million). I wonder if this one tops that before it's done. It's two-thirds there in four days.

A day or two ago when it was a little more than $2M, I looked at my husband and said "You know this is going to hit $10M, right?" and he agreed. I think it's amazing and wouldn't be surprised to see it exceed $10M.

We have no hockey sticks to put outside, so I wrote this:

Hockey Family

We were a hockey family
though we rarely
watched the games
it hardly mattered

we could hear
the neighbors next door
every time their team scored

every time their goalie
made the kind of save
the world needs right now

you could tell what was happening
through bass and treble

bass was the sound of the other guys pulling ahead
treble was the sound of our guys
catching up

you can hear the sound hope makes
when a hockey game is played

and we are a hockey family

having driven through
small Canadian towns
who have little more than a bus load of dreams
and a gas station for the Zamboni

we are a hockey family despite having rarely played

we remember the welt
the slap shot made

so thick it looked like it would never leave

we remember thinking
some of us
are meant for dice and trivia

some of us are too soft
for ice, wood, steel
and the kind of speed
that makes those things dangerous

some of us take the hits
some of us watch the hits being taken
some of us hear our neighbors weep through walls meant to cage the agony of loss

but we all
swallow our breath
in respect of the pain

we all know
it hurts

we are a hockey family.

^ i am starting to wonder how much longer it is until the drivers name gets out thanks to some internet detectives.

i hope the driver does not have any social media accounts, as i would assume that there are some warriors out there who would not hesitate to post terrible things.
