Having Windows 9 had the potential to cause issues.

Makes sense, but also frustrating that Microsoft couldn't do the same, as to me anything written for XP gives my PC seizures. Probably combination of 64bit architecture tho

I think it was also Nadella (or his lead engineer) that also said that they skipped Windows 9 because they envision Windows 10 being the "final" version of Windows people will need.

Also, 10 is a psychologically satisfying number. And it's great for marketing purposes. Just ask George Carlin:

Pretty good series the last couple days (and for a few days ahead) on Gizmodo, with a reviewer sharing his indepth experience with the Windows 10 migration...something (no backing up data) a large majority will be attempting over the next few weeks.

A no BS, no agenda experience/review...given the other high school drama garbage that's going on with Gawker media sites the last week or so, this is thankfully free and clear of that.

3 of my computer updated this morning.

The biggest difference I see is on my surface, the interface works great for me in tablet mode but the laptop mode is light years ahead of 8.1. So far I am sold.

A few quick things I noticed that I might have missed on the previews that is different now.

Cortana does not work unless you switch your region to US English. This is not a big deal because each app will let you switch to Canada so you still get the regional information.

The mail app now actually does proper threading (making it finally useful) and incorporates icloud natively into its mail and calendar.

Any of those updating on windows 7? My windows 8 laptop is updating now, but the 7 is still waiting as it's not in the correct "wave" even though I reserved first on the 7.

Not an issue, just curious.

Try this instead

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/windows10

I used it to download it to USB and update my other server which had not started the update. Be aware that the download can take its time.

*You can also use that site to download it directly to the PC you want to update.

I really want to know how this fresh install procedure will work for Windows 10 upgrades. Microsoft says that after completing the upgrade from 7 to 10, you can use the bootable media to do a clean install. But will that work if say you swap in a new hard drive? Will a Windows 7 key be needed after upgrading for the clean install?

Yeah, I'm guessing the windows 7 wave start later. Diemenz's link works though. You can do that if you're a little impatient.

It's an error. You have to create the thumb drive and go that way. Even weirder is that using the thumb drive takes you to some installation settings etc. When you try to upgrade in the installation setting thing, it'll fail and tell you to exit of the installer thing (asks about windows codes and stuff). Once exited, it'll continue updating.

If that doesn't work, just keep skipping the windows key part. Don't input one.

Incomplete ~Windows.bt folder in your system partition as a result of Windows Update pre-downloading the bits. Delete that folder from C (it's hidden) and try the tool again. Failing that, check the setup log, it'll give a more usable error.

Hmm.. Didn't do that and somehow got around it on one laptop.

Also, if anyone has errors about missing .dll, what I did was use Ccleaner to clean my registry and it went away. I think most of those .dll are left overs from manufacturer installed programs that aren't compatible with windows 10.

I got it on my Windows 7 computer. Updated my 8.1. Had to revert back to 7 though as a lot of my music hardware no longer worked under 10.

On my 7 computer I just went to windows update, checked for updates, and it asked if I wanted to update to 10.
