Scorp are you still doing some writing and reporting on the Coyotes? If that were me, I’d certainly become a fan of the team.

I think the true test is to see where you fall on that metric compared to your peers. In that situation, according to Natural Stat Trick, of the 32 goalies who have played the most, Markstrom ranks 26th in goals saved above expected. That means 25 other starting goalies (for the most part) are better than him and helping their team more than he is. Relative to his peers he is much more in the hurting category than the helping category.
Aren't we saying the same thing?

An average goaltender is towards the bottom of starters in the NHL ... right where you have him, and right where he sits in order of goals saved above average.

I'd say the true average for NHL starters would be 10 worst starters or 10 best backups.

That's where he sits right now.

So does Vladar.

I have always been fascinated by the Coyotes because of all they've been through. The fact they still exist is amazing to me. I got hooked back when they made the miracle run in 2012 and have followed along ever since.

I think the rebuild they're currently embarking upon is very intriguing. Managing to get out from under the OEL contract and getting Guenther in the process was a master stroke. Taking Cooley over Wright was incredibly bold.

Earlier this year I went on a work trip down to Tempe for Daily Faceoff to cover the Coyotes' first weekend at Mullett Arena, and it was amazing. I'm planning on going again in February. It was spectacular and the best professional experience of my career.

Plus, the fun thing about watching the Coyotes is because there's no real pressure to win right now, you can follow the individuals more closely. I've become really engrossed in following the careers of some of the guys down there. Lots of talent, youth, and high draft picks. It's a fun story to follow.

Not for everyone, but I really dig it.

Dude, even when I'm at a Panthers game, I pick a side. Quit hedging your bets and choose an allegiance!

Well I just got to the arena and just realized I completely forgot the toque at home. So that solves that problem!

Sad when you can’t even give away $500+ worth of tickets.

Thanks inflation.

Woah, woah, woah. What about $500 free tickets now?

I live 5 minutes from the dome. Anyone who wants to give away free tickets is welcome to send them my way. Although with this kind of notice, I’ll be going solo.

I see what you are saying, and if you take the top 66 goalies by minutes played (I'm too lazy to narrow it down to 64), Markstrom is 48, in the bottom third. So that to me is well below Average.

But is it fair to compare a $6mil starting goalie to backups? If we compare him to starters he is in the last 1/6th of the league.

To me 25 teams are getting better goaltending from their starter than the Flames, which seems below average to me.

I appreciate all your posts Scorp. You have really come into your own. If I remember correctly people gave you a hard time here and there when you first started posting here. Anyway. Cheers go Flames go! And Schmaltz can score one if we win.

I've always seen the league as 1/3 with great starters, 1/3 with good starters, a mush middle of 20 goalies that are weak starter or backups, then two tiers of backups.

I'd say Markstrom is in that bottom 1/3 of starters right now for sure, which I see as average ... you don't have to though.

I think if the average goalie has an expected rate of x, and you're right at zero you're pretty much the average goalie.

The stat isn't listed as the average starter.
