This accident still brings on a ton of tears for me, my heart breaks for the families. Glad they're doing these things in remembrance. And that is a gorgeous goalie mask!

The team also heads out, or is already on, its first road trip since the accident. A couple of pre-season games in Darcy Haugan's hometown of Peace River.

They played their games over the weekend. The arena was completely packed for both.
And of note from the banner article - TSN will be broadcasting the Broncos' home opener next Wednesday.

Maybe a stupid question, but are any of the victims who survived on the roster this year?

A quick google search showed Derek Patter as the only player to announce he'll be playing again this year. Might have missed someone. I thought I read somewhere that only two kids would be able to play again this season but I could be wrong about that. They don't have a roster listed as of the time of this post.

I had read that two players from last year's team returned for camp. Otherwise, it's a complete rebuild of the roster.

Would have loved to have been there. I grew up playing minor hockey in that arena and can picture what it was like this weekend.

How did they replace an almost complete roster?

Lots of kids play hockey in Canada, I'm sure a lot would jump at the opportunity to play for a team that will get a ton of coverage this season. Play for the symbol on the front and names that have been in the back.

They're a strong group of people if they are already starting to play after 4 or 5 months after the accident happened, Now that's called dedication. That's why these players are very special. I understand that the season would usually start for them now but I was expecting maybe couple more months until they're ready to go but then again they're hockey players.

IIRC from chatter on the radio, they had a version of an expansion draft and were able to take a player from the other teams in the SJHL to fill spots. I'll have to see if I can find something to confirm that
*edit* here we go.. dispersal draft, plus the usual bantam draft, and a free-agent camp

Half the roster was filled via a disaster draft from the other teams. Also, I would imagine recruiting bantam players was pretty easy for Humboldt this time around given the chance to be a part of something emotional and special.

But sitting around and thinking about what happened all the time isn't something I would want to do either. I would want to get back out there, I would want to start building that pride and confidence in what I love to do again. Sitting and thinking about what happened would be worse. Go to therapy and get closure however you need to and grieve as long as you need to but between those times you still need to have fun and do the things you love.
I admire these kids that are getting back, it is amazing.

They picked up a kid who was my d partner in beer league with this summer. He's going to start the season on Pat C's, but likely will be called up to Humboldt, from what he told me.

Talking to him, he's really excited to be playing for them.
