Edit - weird... I read the entire article, clicked a link to Loblaw's financials and then went back to a restricted content message.
Anyways, Loblaws conducted a review, as they do every two years, of their executive compensation pack... which is pretty standard across the entire corporate world. A third-party consultant advised an adjustment to the comp package based on industry and sector equivalencies and standards. GW's total comp increased $1.2mm, or ~10%... Loblaw's stock is up ~20% in the last 12 months, because they hit a number of (relatively modest) sales and growth targets, which not coincidentally is also what the executive comp calculations are based on.
Basically, the company made more money, so GW made more money, which is pretty standard.
That said, it's pretty dense to not see how the optics would play and would have been a super easy PR win for GW to donate the bonus to a foodbank or other similar organization.
I'm not sure if we're supposed to eat the rich because, well, they're rich. Or because they're too rich. Or because you disagree with a standard and meritocratic compensation model. Or because you think they're making money due to some market collusion.
I can definitely get behind the last point and if it's ever proven true, there should be severe penalties and clawbacks of compensation. However, I'm not sure a worldwide inflationary event can fall on the shoulders of GW.
|
What do you mean if proven true. Loblaws paid out for fixing the price of bread, they were the ones who disclosed they were fixing the price of bread in exchange for immunity.

And for the penalty of fixing bread prices… government subsidies for freezers.
If that doesn’t grind your gears…

Why are there multiple sets of traffic lights south of Stoney Trail on 2A?

Still not thrilled with Foothills County for adding that farthest south one, it's fairly new

I think someone at the city is getting a kickback from the company that makes traffic lights because they seem to keep finding new places to install them that never needed them before.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - the new traffic lights at 8 Street and 16 Avenue SW was the stupidest decision ever made. They are simply too close to the lights on 17th, which has messed up the flows of traffic in all four directions on that road.

Highway two at dunbow road had multiple fatalities leading to those lights. I used to come out of that area often onto the highway and it was about as bad as it gets for dangerous entry onto a major highway.
I'm actually surprised there wasn't more deaths there over the years. You basically had to bolt across the southbound lanes to a small middle area and then sit there and attempt to merge onto northbound traffic from a stand still when everyone else was coming down the hill at 100-120kms.

It was basically a two part dangerous event every time that had no place in a modern city. I'm shocked anyone would question that light, lol.
If you were going to be upset at anything it would be urban sprawl that has led to tens of thousands of new residents south of Calgary near Mcleod/highway 2.

Again, it's purely traffic/community density. Do you guys realize how many people live in that area now? It's heavily populated right beside the highway. Lights on a highway suck, but it's 100% necessary.

The Dunbow road intersection should have been an overpass years ago. When new communities pop up there should be a fund from the sale of the lots to do it.

It was supposed to be an interchange even before the lights went in, but Alberta Transportation and Foothills County decided they'd rather wait until the City expands further south so they can get them to pay for some of it. McIvor straight up said that during a town hall back in 2013

I wasn't talking about that area. Since they opened the Deerfoot link to the #2, I don't think I've driven Macleod Trail south of 22X (or whatever it is now).
I was talking about other parts of the city that have gone traffic light mad in recent years.

194th and MacLeod interchange has been planned for like, 5 years, but just hasn't been funded yet

Luckily I don't go to that area of town much, but the new ones on Beddington John Laurie are infuriating. A little creativity would have gone a long way there rather than slapping up lights and calling it a job well done.

Frito-Lay now considers a 235g bag of chips to be "Family Size".
The moniker of "Family Size" is becoming increasingly comical in the age of shrinkflation.

Small car, but doesn't feel small (in a good way), but then feels super small when you want it to be (like parking).

Oh yes, I love my Kia Soul. It's just got a great feel inside, like you somehow stepped into a huge vehicle. Our Outlander, which is a bigger vehicle, feels a little cramped for me, and I'm not an overly big guy (5' 11" 200lbs).
I get the next new vehicle for our family and I'm honestly considering just going Kia Soul again. I especially really like the re-design from the last couple years.

Agreed - I've had to get a few blood tests done and we're talking several weeks to just get an appointment at best. Luckily nothing is too time sensitive for me, so I just wait, but 6+ weeks to get a blood test appointment is absurd.
