That would require people to bloody use them. The entrance to our neighbourhood is basically lined with parked cars because using your garage to store your vehicle -- of which EVERYBODY IN THIS NEIGHBOURHOOD HAS -- is uncool compared to jamming it full of useless sh-t and parking on the street. Anyway, this lining the street with parked cars means that the approach to the pedestrian crossing is obscured until you're almost right on top of it. And these lazy sh-ts, young and old, won't take the 1/3rd of a second it takes to tap the damn signal on approach and warn people that they're at the crossing.

Not being able to keep the lid to your bottle of water at the Saddledome, RGMGs.
We were there least night and my wife bought us each a bottle of water (also Dry January can suck a back of frozen donkey cocks). After she bought them the cashier took of the caps and kept them, say she couldn't have them.
So we each have a bottle of water no lid so ya need to get it in you, instead of being able to have it with you all night.
I get beer and it having to be opened, but water?

Maybe so if it is tossed by an angry fan, it's less painful?

I've seen some crossing lights that are automatic and I'm assuming they are activated based on some sort of motion sensor.

Unless it has changed recently, they only remove the caps from water bottles during concerts.
I don't know if this is true, but I was told by a concession worker one time that it was because people started chucking their caps at Justin Bieber during a concert and he got angry and stormed off the stage.

Oh its almost certainly this.
I'm constantly wondering when I watch the Flames' away games where you see fans in the US with bottles of beer.
Its bad enough (from our perspective its great!) that Oilers fans throw jerseys onto the ice, can you imagine what would happen if those clowns had glass beer bottles?
It'd be like that Spinal Tap concert riot on the Simpsons.

First of all, I doubt Jackie Chan could whip a plastic water bottle lid hard enough to either make it to the stage and if it did make it, I cannot fathom that it would anything more than a mild annoyance.
And secondly...good for those fans. Get your money's worth. See if the Biebs can dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge!

Are you referring to the ones at light-controlled intersections? Those ones are timed with the lights, we're not talking about those; I mean the ones placed randomly in the middle of the road where you've got the ladder crossing painted on the road and a button with flashing lights overhead. I've never seen automatic sensors used for those.

At uncontrolled intersections or along streets where a crosswalk is not at an intersection. I don't remember exactly where I have seen these but it is somewhere in high pedestrian traffic areas (Prince's Island or East Village or somewhere near the various pathways.) I think the crossing signal at the UofC between Lot 10 and the walkway to the Oval is automatic from my experience and recollection.

I'm a huge fan of traffic circles/roundabouts and it irks me to no end that the city doesn't utilize them more, especially in newly developed areas.

I agree, with a caveat:
To get your license you need to correctly navigate a traffic circle.
Too many drivers are ####ing useless when faced with one.

You see...I have a theory about this. It is a two-pronged theory.
Firstly...North Americans and roundabouts are Oil and Water, they simply do not mix. There are two reasons for this, primarily we didnt really grow up with them and the vast majority of drivers dont know how to use them properly.
Furthermore, North American traffic engineers dont know how to make them properly. Case in point:
- There is a traffic circle in Edmonton with traffic lights in it. Madness.
- The traffic circle off of Highfield Road looks like it was designed by someone on Quaaludes.
You try and get people to use traffic circles and then provide them with BS, third-rate traffic circles that suck.
Secondly, Calgary (and Canada) is a cold place. Traffic circles are swell and all, but once they ice up in the winter they're a goddamned hazard.

So are all roads.
Drive for the conditions.
Get winter tires.

Yes, but most roads are relatively straight or with a built gradient. But traffic circles are circles, once they're iced over unless you're a champion drifter they're a hazard.
But when they work they're great.

They are all over the place around me in southern Ontario and we get freezing rain for 1/3rd of the year. They work great.

It’s fairly common practice in the UK to have traffic lights on major circles.

No thanks, I'd rather not drive in Vancouver or Winnipeg. Yes, you're as bad as Winnipeg.

I love traffic circles, we should use them more often. Strugglers, stay home.
