Acquire picks and ship out salary committed to next year. This opens up cap space as it is believed they will make a hard push to land both Panarin and Bobrovsky.

Scroll down to see the retirement cap hit for the Canucks. If I read this correctly, 4+ mil in 2020 and 8.5 mil in 2021.

I'm liking the outlook for the Canucks in the next few seasons.

Welp, there goes the usefulness of my Bjugstad jersey.

Both McCann and Bjugstad have been underperforming for the past two years. Now Brassard is also an underperformer (still a quality veteran), and Sheahan is a good depth forward who has potential to be better than he's been this year.

Bjugstad makes 4.1 million for another two years after this one and is not quite worth his contract. McCann doesn't cost much, but he's a player the team hasn't been happy with since he came over in the first place. Both players coming back are on expiring contracts and are not likely to come back after this year. Throw in the 3 extra picks and this is a good deal for a Panthers team that likely isn't making the playoffs this year.

This was a way for the Panthers to dump cap and give them flexibility for next year. They also acquire picks in the process. I wouldn't be totally shocked to see them go after a bigger name in the off-season. I'm thinking Bobrovsky. They need a real goaltending solution in the very near future.

Yikes on the Panteros giving up Bjugstad.

Bjugstad has 5 goals in 32 games this year. He's approaching replacement level player at this point and he makes over 4 million.

Bjugstad used to be a favorite of mine, but he's really regressed over the last two years.

What do you do with 2 years of Reimer and 3 of Luongo?

Those contracts will be hard to get rid of.

Let's just hope Bobby Lou retires and sticks the canucks with a cap hit for the next few years!

I wouldn't undersell the value of the pens grabbing struggling players from other teams and having it pay off. See Justin Schultz. Bjugstadt is one I believed needed a change of scenery. McCann only 22 and still ha s upside.

Yes, with the caveat he stays healthy.

Yup lots of my people in Miami. In fact the Russian mafia runs large parts of Miami.

Panarin wants to go to Chicago, NY, LA or Miami.

NY is a possibility for Panarin as well. He'd fit right in at Brighton Beach.

Bjustad is a player that I thought would have made a good addition on the Flames, but I didn't think he would be traded.

I think this could be a good deal for the Panthers if they can get a great deal for Brassard at the deadline. I have to admit that I am not all that familiar with him. Is he a good two-way player?

I'm sure there are analytics that support whether or not he's a fit in Pittsburgh or not. But I have no idea what they are.
He's essentially in his prime, which is what Pittsburgh needs (assuming cap hits are reasonable).

After this year, Crosby has 3 more seasons before his real salary drops to $3M per year. That is the same year Malkin's deal ends. The Pens need to keep pushing all of their chips into the middle for the next 3.5 years.

It's too early to start asking this question, but will Crosby want to keep risking his health past age 35 with very little financial incentive? His 8.7 cap hit will probably be fair value for his production at that point (ie. not crippling the team's ability to compete), but will he really have anything left to prove?

It's not at all inconceivable that he rides off into the sunset with another olympic gold medal and Stanley Cup in 2022.
