So... This is what it takes to get 6 Canadian teams into the postseason.

I’m amazed they didn’t announce that the bracket system was off the table. My only guess is that it was Bettman/Daley idea to begin with and they will easily concede idea to gain something else out of this.

Probably, but if they go ahead with a 2 hub plan, it would only mean 1 team having to cross the border at the finals.

At this point, I bet they are still hoping for a possible scenario where [some] ticket sales may be possible by the round of 8/4/2. Round of 4 might not start until August, which is almost as many weeks away as the start of COVID (ie. lots can change)

That's not what I understood him to say at all....training camps start July 1...qualifying rounds late July, first 2 rounds in August......Round of 4 won't start until SEPTEMBER will the Finals stretching to almost October.

One of my favourite parts of the playoffs is cheering against our rivals as hard as I cheer for the Flames. So to kick it off watching 3 series heavily invested in is awesome!

A lot of Ukrainian surnames end in "chuk" and Edmonton has a large Ukrainian population, which led to people calling the city, Edmonchuck, which gets shortened to "The Chuck".

It may or may not be a term of endearment.

So the first 7 spots in the draft are selected on June 26th, and the other 8 are selected inbetween the first and second rounds. No one sees a problem with this?

If they run the draft lottery, and a playoff team wins one of the top three seeds, then a team still in the playoffs will know that they will get that lottery position if they lose the series. Or if they win, the opposing team gets the spot.

This adds an unnecessary wrinkle to the season. I'm guessing that they change that so that the entire lottery side of the draft takes place inbetween the first and second rounds, or better yet, just after the playoffs. This is stupid.

Agreed, it should be done after the play-in round

Harry,

Only the first 7 teams are able to win with the first lottery. Say that two of the 7 teams move up and one of the lottery spots is selected from the 8-15 spots, then the second lottery will run. In that lottery only the 8 teams that did not make it into the first round will be able to win that lottery pick. Each of those teams will have the same odds.

No team is going to try and tank getting into the playoffs for a chance at a lottery ball.

No. As I understood it, they'll do the normal lottery as usual on June 26, assigning the top-3 draft picks to the winners. The lottery odds will be the same as they would have been if the season had played out as normal, the only difference is that the 8-15 spots in the lottery will not be assigned to any specific team.

If the 3 spots are all won by teams in the 1-7 spots, that will be the end of it and the 8-15 draft spots will be filled by the 8 teams who lose the play-in round using their regular season points percentage for ranking.

If one or more of the top 3 spots are won by one of the unassigned 8-15 spots, there will be an additional lottery held after the completion of the play-in round. Each of the play-in losers will have equal odds in this lottery to determine who will get that unassigned top-3 pick.

Even if one of the 8-15 spots wins one or more of the lotteries, none of the teams will know who will get that spot.

Still seems a little awkward. So, if you are going into game 5 of the first round, and your two best players were injured in the series, do you tank if you have a 1 in 8 chance at the first overall pick? (if the lottery falls that way)

Also, it makes draft picks a non-tradable commodity.

Bettman said they want to make a decision in the next 2-4 weeks.

Sure, everything is awkward.

I can't see any team that is going into game 5 of the play-in round tanking the game for a 12.5% chance that their team will get a high pick, even if it is first overall. If you win that game, you keep playing and if you keep playing, you still have a chance.

I'm not sure why it would have any impact on trades. There aren't that many deals made any season between the trade deadline and the last few days before the draft. Sure the gap between the deadline and the draft is a lot wider this year, but it's still just that same gap.

I can’t imagine that after the hurdles they’ll have to clear just to get back on the ice that players would tank, especially tank a playoff game? Why would the players care about the draft lottery when they have a shot at the cup?

These are competitive athletes we are talking about, not somebody playing a 25 year “Franchise mode” on EA sports.
