1st + Andersen? Too much? Too little?

I think Dumba would be a great fit and long term so no issue giving up picks and prospects

Too much for me. I think Andersson could be Dumba in 2 years

I'd definitely have to consider it.

I guess it depends on how good one believes Andersson is. Like FDW says, if you're pretty sure he'll be as good as Dumba in a couple years, then you hang on to him and hope to strike gold with 16th overall as well.

But yeah, Dumba would round out our top 4 starting next season, and for many seasons after.

Giordano - Hamilton
TJ Brodie - Dumba
Br. Kulak - Stone

Pretty deadly, no doubt.

He could be, but I doubt it. Remember, Brodie is the only defenseman to be drafted and developed by the Flames in the past 13 years.
Calgary's drafting has improved in that time, but development still seems to be a large problem.

Dumba had 34 points as a 22 year old. Defensemen like that don't grow on trees.

Stephen Whyno @SWhyno
McPhee already fielding calls from teams to draft a player for them. Team has to give VGK something "better" than what they can claim.

Even though Vegas has lots of choices on D, I'd think Dumba is one they'd want to take and keep. Young, skilled, lots of ceiling left.

Problem I see with trading for forwards through Vegas is that, given they have great options on defence and not so much on offense, cost will be at least market value, maybe more. So a forward is worth more to Vegas than he may have been to his original team. Then again, I could be talking out of my arse.

I'm almost certain they'll use some of their goalies and 1st rounders to pull in a couple decent forwards.

I'm not even sure McPhee does a 1st + Andersson for Dumba.

Not sure what to think of the Canadiens/Islanders expected deal. I think I like it better for the Habs.

I don't think Dumba is that highly regarded. It's not like he has top pairing potential as his ceiling on a good team is probably 4/5.

I agree and it is difficult to argue given Dumba is exposed, but McPhee will have plenty of first round picks in a weak draft and only a few ~22 year old defenceman with proven ability. McPhee might be more interested in the Flames' 2018 first round pick.

Vegas is going to do well with goalies, dmen, and multiple draft picks! They are gonna be lacking skilled forwards big time!

If I was Treliving I would dangle Sam Bennett in front of Vegas.

I said dangle, see what Vegas is willing to give up. I think Vegas would give up a fortune for a guy like Sam.

I would at least make the phone call.

I would want a massive overpayment. Yet in my eyes Sam is worth a massive overpayment. Vegas will have extra draft picks, extra young goalies, young dmen, but they lack skilled young forwards big time.

Just a thought!

Yeah, why keep Bennett, when you could have a chance at drafting a Bennett?! A really, really low chance.

I jest and get the sentiment but the package they'd have to put together just wouldn't make sense.

I can't think of any possible package they could put together that I would want more than Sam Bennett.

This is a fun scenario to think about, Treliving is probably having some conversations like this. Still, a deal of this kind is unlikely, I think the Flames are happy keeping Bennett.

I think the development issue is overstated by many. We didn't develop many good defensemen because we haven't drafted many until recently. Blame Sutter's trading of 2nd rounders and lack of accumulation of picks as the biggest reason for this.

Evaluating defensemen strictly on points would be a foolish way of doing it. How is his overall game? I haven't watched him a ton but it sure sounds like he's been up and down in terms of his overall game. I'm not convinced he's the blue-chipper you're making him out to be. If you think he's anywhere near a Hamilton then of course you make the deal. But to me he looks more like a 4-5 guy long term, although like I said, I haven't watched him closely enough to be confident in that projection. But if he was a stud why would MIN choose Brodin over him?

If you want to dangle a forward, how about Frolik? A first round pick and a decent NHL defenseman?
