2012 was Iginla's last ride. Given our futility to acquire a #1C, I was convinced the only way to get our hands on one was to draft one. The best center Jarome ever played with was Olli Jokinen. That is unforgivable. But teams just don't trade #1Cs unless they're the Bruins. You have to draft them.

I wanted the Flames to prioritize the center position, and in my pre draft research, I noticed one player ranked in the middle of the 2nd round. He was a center, he was 6 ft 2 and he had 94 points. I thought 'huh. Why is a 6 ft 2 center with 94 points is ranked this low?'.

I didn't do any more investigation into him beyond that - I figured he wasn't the play at 14, and they didn't have a 2nd because they had to pay Buffalo to take Kotalik. #### my life.

Regardless, my thinking was this is the sort of player you should be taking a chance on - he's a center. If you want centers, you can't trade for them. Draft 6 ft 2 kids with 94 points.

I also loved the vision behind the pick. Yes, Feaster and Weisbrod loved to be the smartest guys in the room. But credit to them, they recognized this was not the draft to play it safe. They also recognized this was not a draft for now - nobody at 14 was going to help us in the short term, and nobody save Maatta or Hertl was worth much after 21. Jankowski may not be the best player in the draft, but he's on track to be one of the ten best players in that first round.

All the controversy, all the angst, all of it Feaster's fault... To watch this kid grow to perhaps be exactly what that crazy fat lawyer told us he would be... It's so satisfying.

I feel so happy for this kid - Mark, I hope you take this in as much as you can; you're never going to experience anything quite like it again.

Good luck, 77.
A lot of consternation at the time, which was understandable coming on the heels of picks like Greg Nemisz and Kris Chucko.

I don't see how Jankowski doesn't make the team at this point. He's been fantastic.

I think he starts the season with the Flames and will be given every chance to stick. How well he plays early on will determine weather he gets sent down and recalled during times of injures to forwards on the Flames. Either way he has a bright future at the NHL level.

Conroy and Langkow were better centers than Jokinen. Jokinen just had some big years on bad run n gun teams in a PP heavy era.

Geez, Chucko was eight years prior to the Jankowski pick. That's like thinking Chucko would work out well because Derek Morris did in 1996.

Seen some pics of Jankowski in his Friar gear, kid looked great in number 10.

Jokinen has 750 career points, which is over a hundred more than Langkow and 200 more than Conroy. He has more points because he was a better player than both of them.

Savard is the other one, though his total would've eclipsed Jokinen were it not for Matt ####ing Cooke.

Jankowski has finally rounded into the player we wanted when we drafted him as a long term project in 2012. He has been incredibly impressive this preseason. Our forward lines would have serious depth with him as one of our top 3 centres.

No doubt he should make the team, better question is where he plays. I'm still on the move Bennett to wing and play Janko at 3rd line C camp. Could give some real good depth in the top 9.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Tkachuk
Bennett - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg - Janko - Ferland

Could swap Ferland with Tkachuk too but I'd really like to see Tkachuk tried with 13 and 23. Would be a very similar setup to what he had in junior with Marner and Dvorak.

He makes the team. I don't think Stajan is out. I think they both have turns at wing.

Deep at centre, deep on defence. I like it.

As a cats fan when Jokinen was good, Jokinen was a top player in the league. He wasn't what we saw in Calgary. He was never the same after the skate incident with Zednik. The Jokinenn that we saw in Calgary was a shadow of what he was. It would be like seeing Iginla over the past couple years and saying that he was mediocre throughout his career.

Tkachuk - Monahan - Jankowski
Gaudreau - Bennett - Ferland
Stajan - Backlund - Frolik
Versteeg-Hamilton-Hathaway

Brouwer and Lazar in press box

Stajan has shown chemistry with Backlund in the limited times he has played wing with him. Much prefer Hamilton and Hathaway as energy guys on the 4th line.

Does Janko make the team? Yup

Better question:
Assuming Backlund re-ups, list your centre depth to open the 2019-20 season!

Monahan1-4
Backlund 2-4
Bennett 1-4
Janko1-4

I cannot say which line any of these will be playing, other than to say Backs won't be #1 line.

I would say he can score goals given the space. He's a puck sharer and has vision. Hopefully, they don't throw him down low and give him some youth to shine on some upper lines. Throw him on the wing and bump him a line if needed.
