Default 2013 College Free Agent Nate Schmidt

About that time to consider college free agents. So without further ado, introducing Nate Schmidt:

21 year old Junior at Minnesota. Elite prospects lists him at 6'0 194lbs.

NCAA stats:
2010/11 13GP 0G 1A 1P +-0
2011/12 43GP 3G 38A 41P +24
2012/13 26GP 6G 19A 25P +13

Article about him from last season:
http://www.foxsportsnorth.com/02/22/...blockID=671662
Quote:
Few defenseman have contributed to their team's scoring like Schmidt has this season. Among defenseman, only Wisconsin's Justin Schultz has as many assists as Schmidt. Schmidt has gone three straight games without a point just once this season.

Keeping other teams off the board has been the focal point for Schmidt and his defensive partner, sophomore Jake Parenteau, and the result is his sterling plus-minus rating.

"One of the biggest things is going out there and knowing you have the confidence that you can do the things that need to get done in the game," Schmidt said. "Between (Parenteau) and I, we have the same goals; never get scored on and just be really tough to play against. That's the biggest thing for me is I have the confidence to go out there and make plays and have a defense partner such as Jake that we trust each other and go out there to do whatever is necessary to make good plays or keep them from scoring."
I think many NHL teams may have been hesitant to pursue him last season in case he had a fluke season, but he seems to be recreating that same success this season.

Seems pretty promising, similar numbers to Justin Schultz, Just seems much more like a passer. All in all, seems like Justin Schultz light.

Flames with 47 contracts with the trade of Karlsson. If the Flames are not in a playoff position at the deadline I would expect some selling off of existing contracts for picks (UFAs Comeau, Begin, Babchuk, Butler, etc).

Also, Cameron and Patterson contracts end and will not likely be re-signed. Other potential contracts not being renewed include Nemisz, Wahl, Bancks, Kolanos and maybe more. In all, there should be no issues with getting close to the 50 contract limit to sign college free agents.

True, but those slots don't become open until July 1 meaning that they don't offer the prospect of 9+ NHL games (and a burnt year on the ELC) this year that currently open slots offer. Three is plenty enough though since it'd be pretty difficult for a team to sign more then three college free agents that are good enough to command a pre-July 1 contract.

The point I was attempting to make was that the Flames could potentially sign three college free agents and get to the 50 contract limit without any real concerns as a number of contracts will be coming off the books at the AHL/ECHL level. With Cameron, Patterson, Nemisz, Wahl, Bancks, and others coming off the books it opens up more space than was available last year when only Grantham and MacMillan were UFAs.

Good luck signing this guy - he's likely going to have some big time attention based on his numbers.

Are you suggesting the Flames don't stand a chance signing him?

Antoine Laganiere is a 6'4" 200lbs centermen playing his senior year at Yale
His numbers have steadily improved each season, now producing at over a point per game

Attended the Penguins summer development camp.

Don't know much about him, but big center's are hard to come by

You have no proof of that. he may be 'flying under the radar'.

And if that was true - why is he still a UFA?

The Flames have 9 NHL forwards signed for next year, 5 NHL defencemen signed, and 1 NHL goalie signed. NHL free agents are: Iginla, Cervenka, Backlund (RFA), Comeau, Begin, Babchuk, Butler (RFA), Brodie (RFA), Irving (RFA) (bolded are re-signed). This puts the contracts at 21.

Non-roster players under contract are 7 forwards, 1 defenceman. Non-roster free agents are: Nemisz (RFA), Cameron (RFA), Wahl (RFA), Aliu (RFA), Bouma (RFA), Carson (UFA), Byron (RFA), Bancks (RFA), Patterson (RFA), Breen (RFA), Walter, Kolanos, Piskula.
This puts the contracts to 37.

Draftees that need to be signed: Wotherspoon, Granlund, Larsson, Brossoit, Ramage.
This puts the contracts to 41.

Karri Ramo, free agent in Russia needs to be signed.
This puts the contracts to 42.

That leaves up to 8 contracts (likely 5 to keep at 47) for free agents, depth, or college/European free agents.

Defence depth looks like this:
Giordano
Bouwmeester
Wideman
Brodie (re-signed)
Sarich
Smith
Butler (re-signed)
Martin (AHL)
Wotherspoon (AHL rookie)
Ramage (AHL rookie)
Breen (AHL)
Piskula (AHL – non-prospect)

I think there is a good chance a college free-agent defenceman signs. Beyond Giordano, Bouwmeester, and Wideman the depth chart is wide open (although Brodie has been making strides lately).

In any case the Flames will have room for college free agents and will likely sign 2 or 3.

From what I've heard about Gensler, we would be wise to stay away from him. Classic scenario of a guy with all the tools to be a good player, but absolutely no drive and determination to get better, nevermind help the team win.

Coburn is Philly-bound, I believe. His brother plays there, he was at the Flyers development camp in the summer and given that he is paired with Flyers prospect Shayne Gostisbehere at Union College, I think they'll have a long look at him.

Just for info, here is where some of the guys were at development camp 2012:

- Boivin, Coburn - Philadelphia
- Schwartz - San Jose
- Laganiere - both Edmonton & Pittsburgh
- Schmidt - Washington
- Sustr - both Pittsburgh & Tampa
- Goumas - New Jersey
- van Riemsdyk - both Philadelphia & Ottawa

Proof of what? Its merely speculation. No one in the NCAA is is flying under the radar either. The guy went un-drafted and can't negotiate until the season is over......he'll obviously have a ton of suitors.
