Once you do quit don't constantly tell yourself you miss it.

I quit once for 13 months. Not a puff. But the whole time I would allow myself to be envious whenever I saw someone else smoking. I'd wish I could have one too. I'd want to smoke but resist the urge. With that mentality it's only a matter of time before you break and give in.

This time I've been quit for 4 years and 1 month and not once in that time have I ever allowed myself to be jealous of a smoker and desire to partake in it.

Best tip I can give for staying quit.

Also good advice. I too let myself become envious of smokers or convinced myself I really missed it. Best not to let your mind wander down that path. No good comes of it.

Today makes it one week for me and I'm doing great. Even went to a bar to watch the flames game on Wednesday, had a couple near beers and wings. Feel great for the most part.

How's everyone else doing?

I didn't even try to touch anything resembling alcohol for the 1st month.

Today is day 7 of not smoking.

Day 36 of no alcohol or designer drug use...

It feels like I have absolute control of my life for the first time in a decade and a half.

Feels good, man...

Last update for now.

It's day 76 and today I am going on vacation and going to have a few drinks in Mexico (quite a few haha)! Not going to go in full extent but it's been awesome. Dropped 23 lbs (190 -> 167). Encourage everyone to try it.

Man, I don't mean to be that guy but are you throwing away all your hard work just to have some drinks on vacation?

If he quit because he was an alcoholic then maybe. If he quit just to make a lifestyle change then nothing wrong with enjoying some drinks on vacation.

Day 4

dollars saved 18x4 = 72

As a pack a day guy that's what I've saved since Smokes are roughly between $17.50 to $18.50 for premium cigarettes.

This is a cold turkey journey. I finally came to the realization that it was time to not smoke based around friends getting "sick", and that feeling that you're not smoking to enjoy it, you're smoking to do things like stop coughing, or to get around some anxiety that's self manufactured.

So 4 days ago, I took a half pack of cigarettes and tossed it into a dumpster downtown.

Hopefully its time. I've tried to quit before and failed. Usually in the first couple of days, again because I'd manufacture a reason to need a cigarette. Because something would piss me off. Or maybe it was, hey I got through a day, one smoke can't hurt me.

Why am I putting up a post at day 4, mainly because I've gone through the last week pissed off at the world and everything about it.

But day one was a nightmare, day 2 a little less so, day three was me in a 24 hour hour angry funk, where I wasn't yelling at people, but I wanted people to get out of my face and leave me alone. Today, eh better, but you have to get by that whole lungs ejecting stuff like a volcano in Hawaii. Of little things like those quiet moments of being completely wired. or your brain whispering "Hey man, its been four days, you've proved your point, and that cute girl in the store around the corner will lend you a smoke, AND NOBODY WILL CARE"

Its official, my brain is an internal assassin and I hate it.

Stick in there, Captain! One of the hardest things I've ever done is quit smoking but so glad I did. It's been long enough now that I can't remember when I quit and I don't think about it anymore. Mad props to you.

You can do this Captain!

The first 3 weeks are hard and after that it gets really easy really quick!. 5 1/2 years for me and did the same thing as you. Hardest trigger for me was while I was golfing and now the feeling in my hands for my short game is so amazing!

You got this!

Good god, is that what they cost now?
That's crazy.

I just passed the 15 year mark and I'm pretty sure they were going up to $5 at the time.

Front my experience you're over the worse from the physical withdrawal pov.

I was the same. Complete basket case during withdrawal. It gets better.

My advice would be to think of the last time you've ever been four days clean and ask yourself will you ever get a chance like this again. And then when you get a craving just tell yourself to wait five minutes.

Just keep going!

Lol, that is gross, but it's your lungs cilia returning to action and getting rid of crap. That subsides after a while but you're likely going to start a lot of days off with a good healthy cough that's gonna be a bit black/grey in colour.

By the 3 week mark, your lungs are gonna start to feel great. That's the part that always got to me. Regardless of how "fine" you felt prior to quitting, your chest really does start to feel better pretty quickly. Breathing is so much smoother. Slower, calmer heartbeat. All good stuff that helps it feel much more worth it despite your brain trying to convince you to go back to smoking.

It's a battle but the parts like above make it worth it.

I just had a lurid fantasy about getting in my car, driving to Seattle and headbutting a product rep right in the forehead and then getting in my car and driving home.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
