Default Recommend Security Camera System

I have a property that I want to put up cameras on. There is someone there almost 24/7, so all I need are about 6 outdoor cameras, a hub that records the goings on, and a TV or monitor to see what's going on. It would be neat if I could log in from my phone and see what the cameras see as well.

I had my eye on a system by Lorex, but they seem to be complete f-ing strugglers, so now I'm looking elsewhere. A search of the forum brought up a thread from a year ago with one post in it for AARTECH, which has a few options, but I'm hoping for a couple more. I'd be perfectly willing to piece it together if anyone has ideas. I don't want to spend more than $2,000. It should probably cost more like $1,000 all in, I think. But if there are wicked features that push up the price, I want to know about them.

TIA

Nest has just come out with some new cameras specific for outdoor use. No idea if they are any good and I believe everything is cloud based for recordings/storage but you can gain access from anywhere with a phone or laptop.

I believe home depot sells nest stuff in store, and I think they have another line as well.

no recommendations on a system though.

as an aside, I use a baby monitor camera in my garage - does what I need it to do for around $100

Security cameras? Get out there in your bathrobe with a folding chair, a rifle, some whiskey and a pair of binoculars!

Thats how its done!

The most important feature of any camera system is the replay speed options, and the clarity of the replay at speeds greater than real time.

No one ever mentions this, or has realistic demonstrations of their product doing this task. If/when you need to review footage from 6 different cameras and you don't know when the incident took place and you need to look at footage over many hours or even days, it is BRUTAL if the playback system is no good.

Some systems I've had will claim you can watch it at 4X,8X, or even 16X real time speed, but none that I've had has ever delivered a clear smooth image so that this is actually possible to watch at these speeds. Some also claim they only record when there is motion, but these are also a trap and either just continuously record anyway, or even worse, don't record the event you are actually looking for.

Also check to make sure you can get clear screen captures of paused video. Some systems look clear on playback, but as soon as you pause them their 1080p video suddenly looks like you paused a 1980s VHS player.

Really good post. Especially about the playback part. We had a Lorex system in our office and several times I had to look through footage to find an event. First off, their GUI was nothing short of rage inducing and trying to select the time periods you wanted to look through was a painful experience. I almost always found what I was looking for but it shouldn't be a process that ends in you contemplating suicide.

I am happy with my Hikvision Cameras and recorder. Playback is good as are the still captures.

Who did you buy them from? Did you use an installer? If so, who?

I'll get in touch with him to see if he's OK with it and what information he would like me to post, if any. He's a one man show.

Hi,

The guy I used to supply and install my cameras and recorder was Craig Wouters.

You can reach him at cw@evolv.ca or 403 613-8674

Did you install your own or hire it out?
Wondering the best place to get cameras. Would have AliExpress'd it, but the ship time is killing that idea.

Did anyone who emailed Craig get a response? He hasn't replied to me yet... not a promising sign.

I'm considering ordering some Hikvision cameras off aliexpress and trying to install/network them myself.

Has anyone done this? What am I getting myself into with this plan? Any DIY guides out there?

This is the camera I am considering. I figure I can cover the exterior of my house with 4 of them.
