I’m not drawing conclusions based on 2 games either, I expect improvement

But I am fine to raise concerns based on 1 year and 2 games

It’d be great if Markstrom came out of the gates 2-0 with over .950 in that small sample like both Smith and Talbot. They will regress to the mean though
That is not true. The Canucks bled scoring chances and Markstrom bailed them out. You suggesting that Kostkinen and Talbot were equally as good is just not true for that season.

I agree his play as a Flame has been a let down largely because he hasn’t been any better than Rittich, Talbot, Smith etc even though he got the term and money stating he is a tier above. It is fair to question the ROI so far as it hasn’t lived up to expectations yet.

So on the topic of Markstrom, that Kevin Woodley from InGoal was discussing Markstrom and his potential fit with Sutter

One of the things he thought may be an adjustment was the general low event nature of Darryl’s usual teams. The thought was that part of what worked well for Markstrom on Vancouver was the high number of shots from the outside, blended in with a number of higher danger chances, basically that he thrived under the volume of activity. The adjustment he brought up that he thought it would be worth monitoring was staying sharp during the stretches of inactivity, where the team tried to keep shots and chances against down

He noted that Rinne dealt with something similar when Laviolette came to the Preds, and tried to keep engaged by handling the pucks rimmed in

Also noted Vasilevsky had a similar adjustment but dealt with it with his psychologist

A savvy GM would ignore the noise and think long-term, not giving in to FOMO and hype. Tre bought high on another UFA. Might still work out but. The bolded is not a strong way to be making decisions. that's letting hype and noise run your team
Nah - I’m reliably informed that Treliving is scared to make big moves.

I remember Brent Sutter on spitting chiclets talking about how when they picked a team Canada goalie they picked a goalie that was on a good team because they usually faced a low number of shots and those goalies would be used to not facing much shots and still be sharp.

Now not saying Calgary is a good team...but maybe low event hockey isn't suitable for Markstrom.

I do like Markstrom and his mentality. I am going to give him some rope before I join the mob who are starting to pile on. I was so hopeful about this signing so not ready to write him off yet.
Consistently scoring 3 goals a game would be a huge step in the right direction on this squad let alone 4. I don't care who you have in net, no team is winning consistently enough to make the playoffs when they can't convert on more than 5% of their shots or produce 3 goals a game with some regularity.

I refuse to pin the team's woes yet again on a goaltender, when we have a team with a lack of true finishers highlighted by a $7M dollar center that may not score 12 goals this year.

Flames could've picked Brodeur too

I'm with you Markstrom. With you on lack of finishers.

But I'll take the over on 12 goals for Monahan!

Definitely the best goalie of the night

Made some tough saves too

Just eliminate the cheap goals and he is fine

Markstrom has 9 shutouts in 316 career NHL games

4 of those 9 (44%) have been in his 46 games as Flames starter

Before he was a Flame he had shutouts in 2% of his games and since being a Flame he has shutouts in 9% of games

LOL. He hasn’t let in any “cheap” goals. There are a couple shots that have been complained of which, if a Flame scored, we’d be saying “what a snipe”. If those are cheap, then so is almost every shootout goal.

Ok fair, I mean a save you pay a 6.5 M goalie to make. I could think of at least a couple already.

Not saying he is bad but the Flames need him to be a star making the big saves like last night. Sutter game requires that. They’ll be in a lot of close games.

Those are exactly the same shots I’m talking about I’ll wager. And Kipper, Roy, Brodeur, Hasek et al let them in too.

He’s been practically dead last in the list of issues in the 2 losses IMO.
