I'm beginning to think the Flames should never draft another goalie and just stick with the Euro league FA route.

Odd line of thinking for everyone:

I noticed Tyler Bertuzzi quite a bit last year, and he is flying to start the season this year with the Red wings. Looks like a real catch.

It is totally mistifying for me how the Grand Rapids Griffins are able to develop such talent- no shade on Stockton which has done a remarkable job in the last few years (particularly with D-men) but GR seems to be able to turn turds into gold routinely. I mean, Bertuzzi was always a hit or miss type of prospect, but his second AHL season he put up less than .5 ppg (71 12 18 30) then they brought him into the NHL and two seasons later he's smashing 50 points and over 20 goals. Kid has 6 points in 4 games to start this year, and his playstyle seems very sustainable.
To me it would be like Ryan Lomberg putting up 20 goals on the flames. When is the last time the flames have developed talent like that?!!

/rant but I guess my question is, what make GR so different and seemingly skilled at shaping NHL talent?

I mean there are certainly organizations out there that are able to develop talent at a higher levels than others, but Tyler Bertuzzi was a 2nd round draft pick for a reason - and was indeed a very productive junior player as well. In a similar light - there are reasons as to why Ryan Lomberg went undrafted and will never find the success that Bertuzzi has. It simply comes down to talent when comparing these two guys.

Calgary has generally struggled to develop talent in the AHL and a large part of that has to do with the limited amount of picks we have had in the mid rounds (specifically the 2nd round) over the past decade or two.

First and foremost it comes down to your scouting staff and ability to be able to identity players that are not only talented but willing to put in the work necessary for continued development. Calgary's far system has typically been very poor - but it has certainly been trending in a positive direction under Treliving.

It's a tough job - and luck definitely plays a role to a degree. I simply think Calgary's struggles have come down to the lack of quality picks we have had over the years. Todd Button is very good at evaluating talent in my opinion.

Detroit has the advantage of having had a large number of draft picks in recent years.

They have drafted 82 players since 2010. Of those 82, 12 have played at least 100 NHL games. The Flames have drafted 61 players in that same time. Of the Flames 61, 9 have played at least 100 NHL games (which will become 10 when Andersson plays his 100th game later this month). Percentage-wise, the success rates are nearly the same: 14.63% for Detroit and 14.75% for Calgary.

They also seem to attract a lot of College free agents every year. So many kids who grew up in Michigan jump at the chance to sign a deal with the Wings once their college careers are over.

Danny Dekyser is a great example of the latter.

Something to note but Jeremy McKenna has returned to Junior.

Looks like this season will not be his first year pro.

Noone posted the Heat's second game results, a 4-2 win over Colorado again last Saturday:

I’m constantly confusing Jeremy McKenna and Justin Kirkland. Who is Pelletier’s former teammate and what team did they play together on?

Mckenna is Pelletier's former and now current team mate again with the Moncton Wildcats.

Is he still Flames property? Do we own his rights, seems like a good prospect

He has never been Flames property. He was/is signed to an AHL contract with the Heat. I don't know what happens with his contract now that he has been sent back to Junior. I'd guess that he can still play with Stockton/Kansas City after Moncton's season ends.

According to this, it appears it was his decision to return to Junior after the Heat sent him to the ECHL: https://moncton-wildcats.com/article...ack-in-moncton

I'm not sure what happens with his contract, but I'd be surprised if AHL contracts can slide like NHL ELCs. I'd guess he'll be a free agent again next year.

So long as he doesn't hold any ill feelings towards the Flames/Heat/Mavericks, they probably still have as good a chance to sign him as anyone.

Both he and the team are 3-0-0 to start the season.

This season, the Heat are celebrating 15 years of pro hockey in Stockton. They'll be wearing these in their game tonight against Bakersfield.
