Yeah, you almost have to spend to move Pitlick by himself for cap room. And the 5th - I haven’t kept track but Treliving can pick those up just by trading draft spots here or there.
Yeah, I look at the 5th as the cost for Montreal taking Pitlick and his cap hit (essentially the same effect as salary retention). The deal for Toffoli was a 1st and Heineman, which is fair considering Toffoli isn't a pure rental.

It sucks.... I was hoping for Pelletier/Zary/Coronato

We take their salary back and still get their 6-8th best prospect. Terrible return

still possible Flames miss out playoffs

Heineman maxes out as a third liner. Not sure why habs "really wanted" him.

Are we really reuniting all the 75 Pitlicks?

Gotta catch 'em all Pitlicks

That’s very underwhelming. There was no rush with Toffoli unless it’s a crazy return.

Aw Crap. Toffoli going to Calgary would be bad news. For sure Sutter would want this one.
Always wanted to see Toffoli end up here. This would be honestly hard to take.
This is a lot for Calgary to give up but they know its now time.

That's about the same for what we paid for Athanasiou 2 years ago. And the Flames better hope they make it to the 2nd round, otherwise that 1st could bite them in the butt later.

Calgary once again mortgages their future to go all in with a mediocre team.
We’ve seen this script before lol

They kind of have to. Their team is going to undergo some changes especially with the likelihood that Gaudreau is probably going to sign elsewhere in the offseason.

I think that 3rd line of Dube-Monahan-Toffoli has the potential to do a lot of damage in the playoffs like Pittsburgh had with Hagelin-Bonino-Kessel. Speed from Dube and snipe from Toffoli would be hard for opposing team to match up against.

Thus trade is kind of awesone for the offseason as well. If they need cap space to sign johnny or matthew you can always trade tofolli and get a 1st back as he has a lot of value with 2 years left.

Agreed about keeping the top 2 lines together. Took a while for Backs and Coleman to find their games and now they are one of the hottest lines in the league. Leave them be.
Also, Toffoli completely transforms the 3rd line compared to Ritchie. Could be like getting two additional scorers if he helps get Monahan's 5v5 offense going.

That Athanasiou comment is a wacky one, basically acknowledging we paid roughly the same as they did for a guy who played a few weeks for them, but its going to bite us in the butt. we've got 2.5 years of this player

Those are some sweet hands right there -- love that he can finish off the rush.
Hopefully this takes some pressure off of Dube and he can just play fast, direct hockey without thinking he needs to be offensive threat on his line.
Also love that Treliving went out and got him early. He obviously is familiar with Sutter (and vice versa) but no point in waiting when the fit is there and the team is rolling.
If the first line wasn't so hot, I wouldn't have mind if Toffoli replaced Tkachuk and Tkachuk took Coleman's spot on Backlunds line. Coleman then goes to Monahan's line.
Tkachuk and Backlund have played well together in the past and it spreads out the scoring.
You don't mess with the top line. Most games, they are outplaying the opposition's top line, and they're great on both sides of the puck, being three of the top five in the league in +/- (which, with two of them on the PP but not the PK, means more than it usually does). And they way the Backlund line is going, you don't mess with them either, for now. So Monahan, who has played previously with Toffoli, gets a massive upgrade from Ritchie on the RW of his line. Now it's time for Monahan to show if he can still be productive with a quality winger.

Maybe this even strengthens the likelihood they re-sign. This is a well liked guy by so many already on the team you would have to think the crew becomes even more tight knit.
LOL at the Oiler fan saying it’s like their trade for Athanasiou. It’s nothing like that one - they paid Gagner (with salary retained) and two 2nds for 9 games and 2 points of AA. And then didn’t re-sign AA who went on to sign with LA for $1.2M and become a .5 PPG player. And Gagner is still an OK player for Detroit.
