Perhaps a fairer comparison is how the Flames PP was doing once Ward took over up to the trade (ignoring the first 27 games with Peters):
9th best PP, at 23.7%
Still an improvement, but a much better starting point than the 24th best PP under Peters at 15.9%
Edit: ^ Beaten above, but I used the Buffalo game as the starting point instead of the PIT game when the news broke.

Gus kept Gio from playing big minutes on the PP...so expect the Flames to look for that 4/5 dman who can run the PP...just to keep Gio's minutes down

As players I agree.
But if Pietrangelo and OEL both carry caphits of $8.25M (for argument's sake with Pietrangelo), and Barrie signs for $5M? I'm not sure.
OEL also costs the assets to acquire of course.
I'd rather sign a 2nd tier Dman and use the savings on F personally.

I'm pretty sure that OEL wouldn't cost assets to acquire. He'd gain you assets for taking his contract on.
I bet almost every team in the league wouldn't even take OEL + a 2023 1st round pick for free if there was no salary retention.

OEL is not worth $8.25M, but I would have no problem giving it to Pietrangelo-even if it meant potentially losing out on Hall. Pietrangelo is one of the best.

Let's be realistic. Hall is likely the only top UFA that would consider Calgary, both this off-season, in years past, and in the future.
Calgary is simply too undesirable for most players that have a choice.

I think now that we have made a coaching decision. I think you may see things change as
contract talk may increase with many players.

I never said I was being realistic. I have no doubt he's not coming here. Jeez.

I’ve been watching YouTube highlights of OEL to warm up to the idea of us eventually acquiring him. I’m intrigued by the idea of an OEL - Andersson pairing with Gio then slotted on the 2nd pair.
I just feel like the smoke is there, and with Gio taking a step back it just makes too much sense if Tree does believe OEL just needs a change of scenery. Big body, hits, has a shot...paired with Andersson? I’d be into it.
...especially if he comes with Kuemper and Hall’s rights.

Gio and Hanifin are both LD. Gio has to switch?

I think OEL would exceed our expectations based on how he's being talked about here.
His cap hit is just so massive, but if he comes super cheap... I could see it working in theory. Can't even imagine how the trade works though.

I actually think he's not so bad of a player, and I think he would fit in here-salary aside.
