City looking to restart talks on new Flames’ arena
Quote:
It’s back to the bargaining table for the city as it looks to get a deal done with the Calgary Flames on a new arena – with or without the 2026 Olympics.
Ward 6 Coun. Jeff Davison, who chairs the events centre assessment committee, said the city is setting parameters for talks to begin and he is looking at quickly negotiating a new deal after talks broke down just over a year ago.
“We are really trying to get the money we would need from the city side of that into the next budget cycle,” he said. “So we are really going to try to push over the next few months to get a deal together, put a proposal in front of council and hopefully move on with what we have been trying to do for years.”

Please just keep KK and Nenshi out of the same room.

Just wait until nenshi gets voted out. he barely won with a slim margin + a ballot shortage in the predominantly you know what, south Calgary. No organization in their right mind should even think of negotiating with a character like nenshi.

IDK, I'd gladly negotiate with Nenshi given that he seems to have the taxpayers' interests in the forefront of his mind.

That is a pretty big allegation to make.. even if it is indirect.

Can't tell if you like a stance of no taxpayer money for arenas or not, a stance that isn't unpopular in Calgary.

And how about the other 14 councillors? Since Nenshi is only one vote. We're going to vote every single person out as well?

Well, so much for having a reasonable discussion about the arena.

Now that the election is over and Nenshi won (partially on a platform of not paying for a new arena); he can get down to business of building this arena with city funds.
It was always a given to me that the arena would be build using (at least some) taxpayer money. Nenshi just leveraged opposition to it in order to get elected.

I must be slow, because I have no idea what the allegation even is. I voted for Nenshi though, so maybe I'm part of the conspiracy!

I hope this just gets done and ends up being a fair deal for both the residents of Calgary and the team.
I dont live in Calgary anymore, but I visit 4 or 5 times a year and I really hope this project gets done. I dont love the dome and feel the team needs an upgrade (the fans need one as well). Better fan experience and better for the players and potential free agents...

Even this is not accurate. But I guess we're not gonna have a discussion about this consisting of facts.

They're saying that ballot shortages in the predominantly white areas of the city helped Nenshi get elected.

It's strange how one can become so apathetic about an issue that he once felt so strongly about...honestly....I don't even care anymore.
Build it or don't build it...I don't give a damn. Let me know when it's done...or not

The head of this negotiating committee is Davison. I don't know why we need to re-litigate the last round again and again. They will try and make it happen and then if there is a framework for an acceptable deal, that committee will forward it to Council for its full consideration.
By the way, on the ballot thing - My recollection was that the shortage was primarily for Councillor ballots, not the Mayoral ballot (although that may have happened in some cases). It was a conspiracy apparently against Shane Keating.
Another huge problem was in the SE, the mega polling stations for Auburn Bay and Mogagany combined. Serving ridiculously large populations. Poorly planned. And the returning officer got absolutely raked for the thing.

I'm not sure that's what was in the forefront of his mind.
But in any event, negotiations will go better without the distraction of an election going on, for both sides.
