In talks that took place over the past couple weeks, things heated up after the acquisition of Aho and a blockbuster deal was completed.
To the Flames:
Auston Matthews
To the Avalanche:
Krebs
Morgan Rielly
Sebastian Aho
5 mill in cap
This was a tough deal to make as Pat held firm on the price and I had to send cap to get it done now. It is yet another enormous cost but results in Matthews coming to Calgary. I have been after Matthews pretty much since his rookie season. Now I have a core of Mackinnon, Matthews and Makar. The roster is essentially dead space aside from those guys but we will continue to rebuild over the offseason and then supplement the squad using the 8 firsts in 2022 next year.

I don’t think Aho is ‘close’ to Matthews, Matthews is elite up there with the very best. Aho is in the 2nd tier of Uber good players BUT when you also get a guy like Rielly+ you do OK

From the Avs perspective it was hard to let Matthews go but the return was pretty hard to turn down. It makes my team better now immediately giving me a much more well rounded roster. Like Ravi said the 5 mill in cap sealed the deal as this allows me to re-sign these two without having to scramble for large amounts of cap (at least we think so with our projections)
Aho being a 23 year old #1 C and Krebs having massive amounts of potential were key parts here. I’m not totally attached to Reilly but he is a #1 defenceman on a good team.
