Default Last minute parent gift ideas around Calgary

My parents don't really need anything so for the last few years I have been getting them "experiences". Beach boys and other concerts, dinner theatre tickets, stuff like that.

They live in Okotoks.

I'm struggling this year. I was thinking about a fun course that they could go to together. Like a cooking class maybe or some kind of craft thing but I'm having trouble finding anything. Dance classes and things like that are out as my dad had a new hip and knee not all that long ago.

Any ideas for something like that down that way would be very much appreciated.

Did an evening with these guys pre-Covid. Was a fun albeit a little expensive date night. Learned a bunch though.

I'll second that. My sister and I have had season passes there for many years. Great theater. They won't have productions now until about April.

I would suggest getting them tickets for one of the summer shows. At that time, they also offer smaller shows on their Stage 1, which have been excellent.

There is also a new bed and breakfast that was opened in Rosebud last year. So I would suggest this.

Get them a ticket for the first show with the dinner before the show. Reserve a spot in the new bed and breakfast for over night. The next day, get them a ticket for the Stage 1 show in which case they can do brunch ahead of time.

so dinner, show, overnight, brunch, show, go home.

EDIT: If you do go this route, I would suggest the new B&B, Banks and Braes, or else the Rosebud Country Inn.

Also, don't know if you have got tickets for them for this yet, but it is interesting and they offer a very good meal for dinner theater.

Fort Calgary offers mystery who done it shows for Valentine's Day so maybe they would like tickets for that?

Do they drink or mix their own drinks? Do they have interest to make more complex stuff?

Cocktail class?

It's more like an evening to get a few bartender narrated drinks and a Q&A for how to DIY cocktails basics than actual class. But still surprisingly fun and informative. I did the one at shelter, but there's other ones.

I got mine a Westjet gift card. Hopefully they use it to go visit my brother and not come here though.

I can't believe you are struggling with this because there are a number of things to do in Okotoks.

Have you checked the stock at your local gas station?

Seriously though, I know its hard to buy Christmas gifts for parents. They're old. They've had a lifetime to accumulate...whatever they want.

For my mom I've switched to getting her things to do. Whether its cooking classes (that you will unfortunately likely have to attend) or chipping in on trips she wants to go on. Experiences rather than stuff?

This may not work on everyone, but things like a hotel room in Banff where they can do what they want?

Obviously it depends on your budget.

Our parents likely have all of the 'stuff' that they want, so go for experiences they may have put off?

Load up on local goods. A good bet is places like Bridgeland Market or Empire provisions for a whole bunch of goodies you might not normally buy.

Not sure how many people are in your family, but we bought my father-in-law tickets to the Dawgs. Cheap for a couple seats of course but we went as a group of 13 as a family and made a day of it. It was a blast.

Thanks for all the ideas. It's hard to find the "neat" things down there from up here.

My dad buys himself Dawgs tickets every year. I did the spa thing and mom loved it but dad; not so much. Lol. Not his cup of tea. They're not big drinkers and I think they've wine-tasted themselves out after having lived in the Okanagan!

I've sent them to Jubilations and Stage West before but those other two sound good, I will definitely check them out. I like the idea of that cuisine and chateau.

Thanks again everyone.

One thing I keep meaning to get my parents (well mostly my dad) is one of those indoor hydroponic herb garden things. If they really like to cook fresh herbs year round is neat.

You're in Fort McMurrary, so it's a little tougher, but my parents have most enjoyed the gifts that involve time with me. So tickets to an Oilers/Flames game with my Dad went over really well (even though he's an Oiler's fan and they lost).

They're getting to an age were time with their kids is better than any physical gift. An experience gift is better than a physical one but and experience gift that includes you is the best.

Too late for this year, Christmas at least, but I really think both of them would be diggin' that.
