Pay attention to the fabric, like autist level attention. Look for something that has little fibres of multiple colours in it so you can match lots of different shirt and tie combos if you’re comparing two “similar” options. Subtle textures and patterns in the weaving is fantastic. Mostly, go with what you like because it will give your confidence. If you’re wondering if you picked the thing everyone else likes the whole time you’re wearing it, it will show.
Definitely get it fitted. Off the rack can work if you fit the largest dimension and take it to a tailor afterwards. It’s not expensive and makes it yours.
Grab a fistful of the jacket and if it crumples up like a piece of paper, do not buy it.
If you have thunder thighs, get a liner put in to your pants.
Hang it properly.
And you’re going to get both richer and fatter so don’t sweat the fact you’ll not pick the ideal suit first. Anything that isn’t improperly sized will look great no matter what price point you buy at.
If you’re willing to go a distance, you’ll love John’s in Stettler. Get a nice super 110’s by Jack Victor and it will serve you very well.

The travelling Hong Kong tailor / Tailored Man type guys are pretty solid too. Very durable and will get you comfortable with knowing your measurements, fabric options, what can be done.
Have fun with random waistcoats and ties. Make the jacket/suit something classic like a charcoal or navy. Solid or a subtle pattern. Avoid shiny ####.
Spend your money on the shoes instead of a brand name suit. Shoes get you laid, labels get the sales ###### paid.
