No, I can choose. Last year(2020) I actually had a much better December of solar production, should have locked this time around. Laziness really, but the panels are all clear and producing good power so far this month.

I might be able to pick up a 65kW gas fired cogen for my shop. Does anyone have any experience getting a unit like this connected to the grid in Calgary? I don’t think it would fall under microgen programs, and I’m not sure that new law that was getting talked about before Christmas is a thing yet.

If you are under 5MW it's microgen. You can find the Enmax checklist here AUC rule here.

Well that is officially the highest Enmax bill we've ever received.
Yikes

My last bill had electricity up to Dec 29 (new 12 month high) but gas only up to Dec 15.
So I'm glad the "pain" from might be spread out over two bills versus just one (right? right?!?)

It does need to count as "clean" energy to get microgen. Cogen is allowable, but I believe there is a requirement around greenhouse gases/kW generated you'd need to meet.

Man these charges on top of charges are annoying... my actual electricity charge was 34% of the total electricity bill.
Gas charge was 38% of the total gas bill.
This seems accurate:

Us too. Used a 13GJ of NG in December. That was almost double a normal bill.

It used to be you got one number. Then people complained because of "hidden fees" and people wanted to know all the charges. So now you get that. And people complain.

Why shouldn't they? Just because the hidden fees are now revealed it doesn't make it any easier to swallow that we are being nickel and dimed. These fees are higher than actual usage costs.

Finally got hit with the big one - about 50% higher than average. Only went to the first of January, so it didn't cover the entire period of cold, though it did capture most of it.
21GJ total, which is our highest, though not crazy (we've pushed 20 GJ in years past). We do keep the house warmer than most people do though, so that's mostly the reason it's pretty high. We were running a pretty old filter in the furnace too by accident (both my wife and I thought the other had changed it out recently) which probably made it work harder than it needed to.

What do you people think the costs are of delivering the electricity?
Do you get mad at Safeway if they sell you an apple for $.01 over cost at $.35c, but then charge you produce clerk fees, store heating fees, cashier fees, to get to the same $.80/apple cost?
I don't understand how people can be this obtuse - power is expensive not only to produce, but to transmit and maintain the transmission infrastructure...
I am usually confused by these posts... This is a regulated industry that gets a huge light shined on its profits and infrastructure costs regularly...
On top of that, even if you disagree and think they're absolutely bending us over as consumers, you know you can go buy ATCO or Direct Energy (parent NRG Energy) stock and enjoy the spoils of this perceived consumer-buggery?

Not only that, Enmax profits go back to the city.

"Well, this is the cost, people!". "If you want to pay less, expect get less services!" This is the same kind of post. Regulated energy delivery is not a simple thing, but in the end, it means, that providers' and distributors' profits are limited to a governed rate, which is around 3% or 4% a year on their costs, I believe. There is a good reason Berkshire Hathaway bought AltaLink - it's like a AAA guaranteed bond. But it is their costs that are a problem. For anyone who had to deal with ENMAX or AltaLink or ATCO – they are operating like USSR-type bureaucracies - taking their sweet time to design simplest things, to respond to an email, to attend a meeting, to provide outrageously long schedules without any chance of negotiation or challenge etc. Their staff and management salaries, benefits and administration overhead are gigantic. They own beautiful buildings and they allocate/download costs of owning and operating these buildings to these little fees and charges.
As an engineer, I would be the first one to vouch for public safety over costs. But efficiency is hardly second on their list of priorities.

My October and November bills combined are lower than my most recent bill

My bill was for 36 days rather than 30 so that immediately increased the bill total across the board by 20%.
Once that was accounted for it wasn’t exceptionally high
