Reading the latest from Mr Haynes has me very curious to see what happens when the team gets a little healthier.

Those stats show that this is the best Brouwer has played all season. Who knows why. Was he sulking on the 4th line? Is Backlund really the ultimate tonic? Brouwer is even passing the eye test too. He has looked much more engaged and physical since promoted to the Backlund line.

So what do you do when Frolik comes back? Or even Versteeg?

I would be tempted to leave Brouwer with Backlund, and put Frolik in Hathaway's spot with Jankowski. Mangiapane goes back to Stockton and Hathaway drops to the 4th.

The 4th line has been at its best this year when it has some youthful energy. If a healthy team features Stajan, Versteeg and Brouwer on the 4th line in a return to the black hole of possession, i'll throw my TV out the window.

I know generally, your best players and goalie are responsible for night in and night out success. But you can't say that a buzzing 4th line hasn't contributed to some of the success of this 7 game streak. Especially the amount that Gulutzan likes to play them.

Brouwer may be playing his best hockey of the season here, but that doesn't mean that Backlund's line is playing it's best hockey of the season.

The line is better with Frolik on it. End of story.

I agree the line is better with Frolik but then you put Brouwer on the fourth and he plays not as good and that line isn't as good either. IMO Frolik has shown that he can play most anywhere in the lineup. If he's on the fourth line with Lazar, he may just balance the kid out. It may make one line not as good but make another line a lot better and Brouwer seems to play well with Tkachuck. It's pretty clear that Brouwer is staying in the lineup and he's played his best hockey in this past stretch on that line, I'd run with that line for a while.

Brouwer is still dragging down that line. There is no way that Frolik loses his spot when he comes back.

I agree that the line is obviously better with Frolik than it is with Brouwer, but maybe it is worth keeping Brouwer there and putting Frolik on the 4th to balance out the lines. It also may have the secondary benefit of upping Brouwer's stock and making him trade-able in the offseason.

I think this just also goes to show how good Backlund and Tkachuk are. The Backlund and Frolik pair were solid but just took to the next level with Tkachuk.

You don't weaken your second line in order to prop up your fourth

What's up with that. Is he not what Coyotes expected, or was he taken just to F with the Flames? Should be a pretty good chance he hits the waiver wire again and is returned to us.

Edit - yeah what Jaikorven said. (I was double checking that he hadn't played before I posted - didn't see your post)
Really? Treliving came from that organization. I am pretty sure what is up was a phone call:

"Hey, its Mr. Wizard. I have this situation. I need to get one of my top D mens head clear and the only way is to get his bro away from him. I hear he likes hot weather. Anyhoo, if your on the waiver wire tomorrow...."

Are you really suggesting that it was just a favor? Why would they keep him to just take their 13th F spot? It makes no sense from the Coyotes perspective.

It also makes no sense form the Flames' perspective. I am sure the Flames would rather have him in Stockton than lose him to the Yotes.

Unremarkable as Familton was, RW depth wise he was the gap between Brouwer and Poirier which is now cavernous. Sure hope we stay healthy because with Jagr and Versteeg gone RWs are already in short supply.

I don’t get any of it. Generally a team knows they are going to lose a guy on waivers. They shop him around. Try to get something for him. To waive him earlier and then not protect him in the minors as a callup... I just never understood Trelivings intentions. Especially after the “he needs to play” comment.

His rankings are usually pretty dang good, but I think we were all confounded by his high ranking of Mason Mcdonald earlier.. That one has been a miss the whole time.

The difference between being a backup and a starter

Quote:
Take Rittich, for example. The Czech rookie was 5-0-2 with a 1.96 GAA and .938 SV% in seven starts while a back-up to Mike Smith. Since the Smith injury, his performance has dipped and the drop-off hasn't been subtle. In six starts, Rittich is 1-4-1 with a 4.41 GAA and .864 SV%.
