This is more on scouting than Treliving. He might make the final call, but I doubt the scouts knew this or would make a recommendation if they did know it. Either way, the Euro scouts are probably in deep #### after something like this.

How the hell does this not come up in the pre-draft process? Seriously. He's saying this has been up in the air for two years, how come the team(s) didn't know? You'd expect they turn every stone, especially if it's your only pick in the first four freaking rounds.
I was a huge fan of Treliving, but since he has left and things have come out I am glad he is gone.

Seems like he turns a blind eye to character issues. Even with the guys he brought into Toronto like Bertuzzi.

Highly questionable.

How are they supposed to know about the accusation(s) if the player nor agent never disclose it?

Wow, when will the Flames related bad news stop coming... It is almost comical at this point (not this news itself, it's horrible and we should cut ties with Topi Ronni if it is determined to be true).

I get what you are saying, but when you get down to your list of guys you want they are brought in for or have interviews.

He is in those meetings. They have pre draft meetings so many of them to nail down the list and prospects.

If this was one misstep by him I would buy it.

Anyways not turning this into a Treliving bashing thread, but this is not a good look on the Flames organization.

I really doubt the Flames (or any other teams) knew about this. He was a really low ceiling pick who didn't fall significantly. Guys have fallen much further for much less.

Don't they do background checks?

Like with any job don't you have to get like a police check and stuff done?

If it was well known around the league it would have come out a long time ago...it seems obvious that nobody knew not just the Flames

It's also unrealistic to expect teams to do extensive background checks and interviews for the entire draft class. That stuff costs time, money, people, resources, etc. The reality is teams don't have the resources to do that for 200+ kids.

I can see how this stuff can (and does) go undetected often.

He was a minor who hadn't been charged yet. There wouldn't be anything the police could legally disclose.

A PI who dug around and did a whole bunch of interviews might have uncovered something.

Not familiar with Finland's privacy laws, but he would have been 16 or 17 at the time and considered a minor.

Possible that if it occurred away from the hockey team, not even hockey circles would know.

Lane Hutson went 3 picks later. Unrelated to this but wish we'd swung for the fences on him

either way, not disclosing something serious like this is also unforgivable on the player's part.

It would be really tough for the organization to know about this at the time of the draft. Because 1) it happened when he was a minor 2) the investigation might have started after being drafted. It's probably for the best Flames cut ties though.

I hated the pick in 2022 and even more today. They should have drafted Hutson.

Definitely grounds to cut ties. It shows a real lack of judgment IMO.

Agreed, its ultimately grounds to release the player.

But it's not a job. He's not under contract with any NHL team... as far as we know he's never even been offered a contract and I don't think it's realistic to expect the NHL to collect a Police check on every single draft eligible player worldwide (some of whom would be under the age of majority). Even if they did it would still have revealed (presumably) no criminal record since I doubt the police would say anything about an ongoing active investigation (I doubt they'd do that if he was an adult at the time and doubly so since he was a minor).

It's a different country, and a minor disclosing an active investigation to a potential employer could also be stopped by actual government policies or the police themselves.

So you think a standard Police check surfaces up crimes you haven't been found guilty of, or haven't been charged of at the time of the check? It certainly does not.
