There was a crappy goalie once who posted an .879 sv% 3.25 gaa and a 5-14 record as a backup who played 1/4 of the games. He showed flashes of skill but all his metrics said he was terrible too.

Thankfully his team gave up on him otherwise we’d have several fewer banners and a number less up in the rafters.

I actually think he's very talented and capable.

He has moments of brilliance. The problem is he can't turn it into stretches of that elite play and it feels like most good periods come with a bad one.

Overall not quite at the level we need, just going by the stats and where he ranks among his peers.

Definitely not true as teams didn't track underlying metrics for goalies back then.

Vladar is neither the problem nor the solution for this club. I would be a little concerned though if he were to be the guy paired with Wolf next year. An older vet would seem like a better fit.

His underlying metrics were probably great with those numbers.

i think we all want him to succeed, but it's ok to say he's not a good NHL goalie. We can say the eye test is not as bad as the stats, but that stats are awful and the eye test isn't stellar. He's just not getting it done, as much as we'd like him to.

I think with some proper coaching, some of thet could improve. For a guy as tall as Markstrom, Vladar gets beaten high, a lot, because he makes himself a few inches smaller then other goalies when going down into the butterfly. It's not reaction time of the glove or blocker, it's over the shoulder shots that should hit a goalie who is that tall.

He also loses the net more than goalies should, sliding too far out when he starts moving around.

It seems like mechanics things, but with video out and shooters so precise, the smallness such a big frame in the net, other teams have picked up on and target it, clearly, from the stats. Sure, they are chances that on the eye test makes you think the player shooting shouldn't have had such a clear shot, but if it was saved you also wouldn't say that it was a massive save.

Again, coaching could help this. I thought Rittich was cooked when he left here after dreadful Dallas playoff game 6, then the next season where he got pulled in 1/3 of his games after his ASG appearance (by default) and Oilers shootout stick drop the week after...and especially when he let 3 goals on 5 shots to let the Flames win a game in Nashville in his only year there.

But, he's gone to LA and revived his career....coaching?

Vladar seems to have a good attitude, but most goalies who are backups, stay in that backup role. Goalie coaches seem to last a lot longer than anyone else on coaching staffs, so he's not going to probably progress any further in getting any more answers, in the current situation here.

LA is a solid defensive team, I have my doubts Rittich would be playing this well in many places

It's also not true that his team gave up on him. They had three NHL-quality goalies and could only keep two of them.
