Default Were Flames disrespected? Sutter says so.

Asked what he was most proud of, Darryl Sutter said that the Flames earned back the league's respect this year.

They won the division before COVID, but seems like the head coach believes the re-established identity in his second stint puts them back on the list of teams others don't want to play against.

Interesting that he talked about being a cup contender as a 4-6 year process, and that the most important guys on the team are the ones in the 23-27 age range and whether or not they're growing and progressing. Makes me wonder how long the plan is for him to stay behind the bench. Should we be expecting a six year tenure?

It’s better to be disrespected by the media as then it builds the “us against the world” narrative which supports hard work, which with this level of parity in the NHL is required to be successful.

It’s not good to be disrespected by the NHL when they choose favourites to win for business reasons and manage outcomes.

I truly hope with assistant coaches Huska, MacLean, Love (Heat coach) and Muller that one of them has the skill to take over when Darryl steps aside .
I hope Darryl gets us deeper next year but I guess that's depending upon what curves the league throws at us.

Deeper next year will depend more on whether Treliving can resign Gaudreau, Tkackuk and a skilled d man rather than the 2 slow plugs back there now.

I expect big things from Valimaki and Mackey and Pelletier and Ruzicka next year.

Honestly, I realize some posters are choked at the loss to the oilers and worried about johnny and tkachuk. But this is a really exciting off-season for the organization where you have four young guys who could be in impact roles. All of those guys could be playing ~15 minutes a night and be improvements on our current roster. And then add a full year of healthy Monahan.

This team might actually be four lines deep and three pairings strong for the first time in my life.

I guess it depends what you consider to be "big things" but I can see Mackey playing in 50-60% of the games and Ruzicka in 75-80% of the games. Valimaki isn't ready until he can be consistently steady in the AHL and will need another year. Pelletier, I have no idea but leaning to him not making it full time next year but probably getting 3-5 games.

Look at the first few pages here of garbage bag day last year, and any player acquisitions threads this past offseason, and the Flames gained some respect back here since then too.
