Default Bettman signs 7 year contract extension

http://www.tsn.ca/bettman-inks-seven...nsion-1.431203

Quote:
Bettman, 63, will remain at the helm of the NHL into 2022 after signing a seven-year contract extension, according to TSN The Reporters’ Michael Farber. He will turn 70 just prior to the expiration of this deal.

Bettman declined comment to Farber, saying he never discusses his own situation.

Bettman’s extension through the 2021-22 season would make for 29 years on the job, outlasting his contemporaries from the other four major professional sports, including MLB’s Bud Selig, NFL’s Paul Tagliabue and NBA’s David Stern.

Bettman's done more to grow the game then anybody in the history of hockey. No reason to not bring him back

70 by the time this next contract ends eh? One has to wonder if he can physically handle the stresses of the job by that age.

I don't mind Bettman, but I'm a bit surprised by this. Daly is absolutely ready to take over, and in many respects I think he should. We have labour stability and some major projects on the way. Bettman can be proud of keeping the league viable and growing it, but it's probably only down from here for him.

I can't wait to see what he does. He's saved the game and he'll be the guy to bring a ln other team back to Canada.

Batman is disappointed, he wanted the 7 year contract instead.

Sorry Bats. You're the commissioner the NHL deserves, but not the one it needs right now.

Not so sure I like the term of this deal. Big reason is that Bettman's contract expires at the exact same time as the CBA (end of 2022 season). This would put the commissioner in a weak position heading into what will probably be another work stoppage.

The Rogers deal expires in 2026 and the NBC deal expires in 2021. It'll be interesting to see how the NBC one goes in what will be a much different world when it comes to TV five years from now.

And how many lockouts, engineered by owners, and executed by Bettman, are YOU willing to not resent?

If Bettman didn't get teams cost certainty, Canadian teams would be in a blubbering mess due to a 70 cent dollar right now (which is heading towards 60). As it stands, it's a very nice drag on the salary cap.

Hockey Fan...call me a cynic, but, I really don't think that the NHL Owners, or Bettman, had Canadian teams' well being on the front burner, as they repeatedly tried to sink the NHLPA.
